New For Old Insurance
Does it do what it says on the tin?
I am about to find out.
Our van barely 6 month sold was literally washed away in the floods last
week. Ended up about 150 yards down the site full of mud and smelling of
diesel oil. Total right-off. So now we begin the process of insurance
claim and seeing what we get under New For Old. - insured with AXA. I
wonder if anyone has had any experience of this.

Just grateful we weren't in it at the time - and especially if it had
been at night. Some 30 - 40 tourers and about a dozen statics written
off.

Oh my god look at your comments you pathetic people have made.
"You have my deepest sympathy's m8, it must be heartbreaking to see that
happen."
"How very tragic"
You would think that this much dismay could only be caused by the death of a
loved one.
Wrong, it was caused by a caravan being flooded.
Pathetic people with pathetic problems, you seriously need to get a life.

More to point - I'm one of the people who are going to have to pay for the
replacement caravan through increased premiums as the insurers balance their
books.
So, if their is any 'tragedy' involved - it falls upon those who *don't*
make claims, but who subsidise those who do.
The insurers have (unfortunately) no choice but to pay out for a new van,
because that's the contract. After that, however, the OP should be on his
own - no more pay-outs.
I bet he'd be a damn sight more careful with his caravan if he knew that he
could no longer rely on insurance.

More to the points perhaps
I've been Caravanning for Nigh on 40 years
In those 40 years I've had ONE claim ,
Regrettably at that time I wasn't with the caravan club
I lost a full season caravanning because some insurance company argued about a
£1500.00 claim ,
They then tried to double my insurance on my card without telling me and then
tried to make me pay the 1 st £250. 00 needless to say eventually the fell foul
of the insurance ombudsman and the credit card company
The Caravan Club Insurance had 30 caravans on that storage site settled them ALL
in FOUR WEEKS
If I loose my van through some misfortune I recon I've already paid for a new one

You wrote,

Isn't that the whole purpose of insurance. We all pay in and the
unfortunate few take out. Or would you rather it be you who has had the
misfortune to have to claim.
If you are against the principle may I suggest that you don't take out
any insurance on anything in future then you won't have to "subsidise"
the rest of us.
I can't remember the last time I made an insurance claim for anything
and for that I am very very glad (not resentful as you appear to be.

I can only assume that such a stupid reply is designed to be
deliberately provocative - and I can't be arsed replying any further.
For the benefit of more intelligent members of this group, so far it
seem to be quite reasonable. I've gone through what is and what is not
covered with the loss adjuster and I get replacement 2009 model of same
type or full insured value towards an upgrade if I want to go that
route.

No, not really - just a fellow caravanner who doesn't relish contributing
towards your 2009 van
If you were such a foolish tit as to leave your van in a flood risk area -
that's your prerogative. I don't see why your titishness should be rewarded
with a brand new caravan, though.

To busy counting your loot, no doubt.

I expect that you were 'devastated' - yes? This country if cock full of
'Devastated' flood 'victims' - they adopt their best mournful expression for
the TV cameras, and employ the 'D' word at least fifteen times in every 20
second sound- bite.
They are usually to be found posing by their ruined furniture (often a
virtually worthless collection of old tat) for which they expect to receive
a handsome insurance payout - and they will keep on telling an increasingly
disinterested nation just *how* 'devastated' they are, until the cheque
arrives and they can stop feeling 'devastated' and start whistling their way
off to the shops.
Like I say - bugger you and your bloody stupidity, why should I have to
compensate you for being a dickhead?!!

You only have to compensate me if you have paid an insurance premium. If
you don't like the rules don't join the game. But thanks very much for
your generosity. I will think of you when my nice new 2009 model van is
delivered. In the meantime I'll go and have another look at my claim and
see if I can revise it upwards, just for you. Maybe a new set of golf
clubs or something like that.
