Servicing ...
Well, we have a row of three weekends where we aren't out in the 'van
so we've given it a full service today, as we have the Landrover last
weekend, ready for our trip to France on 9th August.

We're touring Northern france, Brittany, Normandy etc etc for a
fortnight, so if anyone knows of any 'must see' places, please shout
up. We've been to Mt St Michel and want to view the Normandy Landing
Beaches etc. Only just starting our research into the area so any
pointers and good places to see will aid us tremendously.
Cheers.

Try and see the Parish Closes in Finestere if you possibly can. They are
unique.

Southern Brittany has the Carnac stones and various tumuli to visit.

If you're in Northern Normandy try and get a look at the German War
cemetery at Orgalndes or any of the War cemetery's, it will put you off
fighting forever.

I would agree - depending how far North you are seeing some of the WW I
sites is a very humbling experience. A favourite of mine is Newfoundland
Park.

I don't know if you have any Scottish connections but following Dunkirk the
51st Highland Division

http://www.ww2inthehighlands.co.uk/folders/localhistory/highland51st.htm

were captured at St Valery. This loss is still a source of some bitterness
locally as there are some who feel they could have been evacuated but were
deliberately sacrificied. There is also a feeling that it does not get the
attention it deserves as much of the focus is on the success of the
evacuation at Dunkirk rather than the people who stayed behind to fight the
rearguard. Regardless of the views it has a place in WW II history and is
worth a visit.

Thanks, Neb, this is the first time I've ever heard of what, if anything,
happened after Dunkirk. I couldn't imagine that there'd be nobody left.

Re: Servicing ...
In May this year went to Bayeaux (not a bad market BTW) and as you might
expect went to see the tapestry. The queues were horrendous with a minimum
one hr wait expected. At the information desk one of the staff suggested
that if I was in the area and able to call another day 12:00 to 1:00pm was
the best time to avoid long queues. Did that two days later and went
straight in no queues at all. Most people at lunch I suppose.

I think we're almost passing them, well, within 50 odd miles or so ...
;)

They're on our list ... ;)

That's one of the main reasons for going. Lots (something like 12/13)
of our family served in the area, two died but more remember it and
we're visiting the graves to lay a couple of momentoes.

Thanks.
