Thetford Cassette toilet - model C 4020L
My Hobby has this model cassette toilet fitted from new. A very nice
toilet even to havong a wheeled waste compartment which I can trolley
around rather than haved to manhandle it!

Only problem is that there is no sight glass / pipe on the wash water
system as I have found in the past on older systems - this means that
I can never be sure as to how much water there is in store and also
that I have no method of emptying the system apart from pumping it
into the toilet until it's empty and then having to tyrolly it away.

Does anyone know whether Thetford have come out with a modification to
this to allow me to fit a sight pipe / emptier - or if not has anyone
any ideas as to how such a modification tould be manufactured?

Can you gain access to the inside of the tank by some means?

If so I would think in terms of drilling a hole low down in the tank or
even better on the bottom of the tank, such that you could add some
sort of fitting (bulkhead fitting?)which would clamp the surrounding
edge of the hole and also allow a short bit of clear small bore pipe to
be fitted. Route the pipe up above the tanks upper level into a C clip
to retain it, leave the end open and the water level would be visible
in the pipe. Lower the end of the pipe below the tank level and it will
serve to empty the tank. Thorite (air fittings specialist) would likely
be able to supply a suitable brass fitting.

That is exactly how my toilet works and the pipe is visible when you
open the cassettes outside access door.

Another way would be to stick some of that temperature sensitive strip
vertically up the side of the tank. It's colour would change at the
height of the water level, because the water will usually be at a
slightly different temperature to the air above it. That will not help
with your emptying problem though.

Thanks Harry.

Problem is that I can't get access to the inside of the tank easily -
and I have arthritic hands when I get in it so no doubt I will drop
things inside! In any case, looking closely into the cavity, the
holding tank is an only-just fit and, unless I was using a very fine
tube it just would not fit in and then I would not be able to see it
clearly. The only place I can think of where I could fit a sight
tube would be on the side of the toilet - inside the bog ( and I can
just see the chaos which would ensue when it got knocked.

I don't think the temperature strip would work as the temperature
difference would be very small small - as compared with a gas cylinder
- and that plastic is a good insulator so it would not show much
temperature difference.

Looks as though I have to suffer it for a few more years, but at least
I can wheel the bog to the disposal!!

Just a thought (I admit I have not really thought it through yet as to what
materials to use that would show up easily) to check the flush water level
why not a simple dip-stick via the filler inlet.
