Warning watch you Calor dealer.
Look at Calor's price for 6kg Propane, £16.10 inc. vat.
https://secure.calor.co.uk/OrderCalorCylinders/default.asp?PageType=propane

This morning been to my caravan dealer and he asked for over £17.
Then went to 2 Calor specialist dealers they wanted over £18, as did the
local hardware/DIY shop.

Is this the way this country is going rip off people while you can.

I don't know whether that last remark was serious but if so are you
suggesting that overcharging is a recent pnenomenon?

I cannot see how different prices for the same goods in different shops can
be wrong, it's what a free market is all about. You have the choice where
to buy from.

The alternative to a free market economy is a control economy with prices
set by the state. Would this suit you better?

It is not usual to charge more than the Makers list price.

Ok it happened with the Wii games console due to limited supply but Calor
gas is not in short supply.

Are others being charged more than Calors recomended price or just round me?

But it isn't a free market. It is dominated by one supplier - Calor.
They demand that their dealers only sell their product, or their supply
will be cut off - hence BP lightweight cylinders are being shut out of
the market. Imagine if a supplier tried to tell a supermarket they could
only sell one brand of chocolate. At the same time Calor will only
supply lightweight cylinders to caravan outlets. So I have been forced
into buying Calor rather than BP and to exchange a cylinder I have a 30
mile round trip instead of a couple of miles to my nearest local Calor
stockist.

Whilst I agree Calor abuses the market I can't agree with your comments on
BP supply.
My 2 local caravan dealers have Calor and the BP ones you mention.
My 2 nearest Homebase stores have the BP ones you mention.
I found this on the BP web site from inserting my post code for their
suppliers.
Asking for suppliers to delivery was negative.
Calor claim to deliver any where in UK.
For you to drive 30 miles to get the BP seems rather like cutting your nose
off to spite your face.
A local caravan dealer was most annoyed with Calor when I told them Calor
had said to me this morning the list price was £16.07 ( £16.10 on web site.)
They told me it was £17 and selling at that was 8 % more than they are
charged.
If that the case why do they bother selling it.

Sorry, wasn't clear. The 30 mile round trip is for a Calorlite, not BP
-they would be a bit further.
My nearest caravan dealer who were listed on the BP website specifically
told me they had stopped stocking the BP version because of threats from
Calor.

David,

I am surprised you have caravan dealers selling Calor and BP gas.
Like Hugh, my local caravan dealer also, was forced to discontinue
selling BP gas, or Calor would withdraw their own supply. Perhaps if
these bullyboy tactics have been relaxed, my local dealer will start
to supply the BP gas again - I must ask them!

Hugh,

Do you not have a Homebase store close to you? I think BP gas is sold
through nearly all of the Homebase chain.

Yep, anything. Old baked bean tins, washed condoms, Tesco carrier bags,

What do you think?

Been every where in my area all higher than the £16.10

Morrisons advertise it at £16 but never any stock.

You look after your dealer.

I ended up with a Flogas at £13.84 delivered !
Calor want an extra £4.50 on top of £16.10 = £20.60
£7 MORE.

It is fine posting these prices BUT dealers here do not sell 6kg Propane at
£16.10
But at £17 to £18.50 normal cylinder.
My nearest caravan dealer says with his £17+ be pays to Calor 8% less than
his selling price. This caravan dealership is personally owned by him know
him for years, very much doubt he is lying to me.

The Calor logo Price lists do NOT have £16.10 on them.

My supplier,Calorgas in north Staffs, charges 47p a litre. I have
just been to the Highlands of Scotland and paid 65p a litre. I
expect it to be more expensive in remote areas because of extra
delivery costs but and extra 38% is unreasonable. I suspect it is
just another case of rip-off Britain.

I have not followed this thread in detail but my back always gets up when
somebody has a knock at Britain. How does the price of gas in Britain
compare to the rest of Europe? I have no idea, but in April and May this
year I toured east across France, Belgium and Germany, north up to the
Baltic and then back through Holland, Belgium and France. My Calor gas
bottles lasted the whole trip. Unleaded petrol was generally much the same
price as Britain but a little more expensive in Germany and Holland.
Campsites in Germany and Holland were more expensive than France and
Britain. Food seemed much the same all over though strangely enough French
butter was dearer in France than in Waitrose here. A caravanning friend
phoned me this evening. He has just got back from a six thousand mile tour
up into Norway and back south through Finland, Sweden, Germany, Holland,
Belgium and France. Up north in Norway and Finland he was paying the
equivalent of £1.50 a litre for petrol and £33 a night at campsites. He
drives a Citroen C5 and had trouble with the fuel injector in Norway.
Repairs cost him over £900. He knows it would have been much cheaper at a
dealer here in Hampshire.
I think that before you use the expression 'rip-off Britain' you should
provide comparisons with other countries with similar living standards to
ours. There are people everywhere prepared to try and rip you off but by
the time you reach the age of understanding you should be aware of this and
try to take avoiding action. In my seventy years on this planet I have been,
like most people, 'ripped off', but I assure you it was not only in
Britain.

Regards.
Dave.

My 'rip off Britain' comment should perhaps have been rip off autogas
dealers. As I reported in my last post I can get autogas at 47p a
litre at a near-by garage. At another garage down the road, not more
than a couple of miles away from the one above, it is 60p. That sort
of price difference can only be a rip off.

Our local Morrisons is 57.9, consistently about the highest in the group
- only because there is no immediate competition.
