Overnight at motorway service areas
I recently found a list giving details of staying overnight in a caravan on
motorway service stations. It listed locations and costs. I think it might
be a .pdf file. Does anyone know the location of this file?

Thanks,
John B.

I'm surprised to hear the motorway services have overnights for us. I say
this because I find them most unwelcoming during the day. Those I stopped
at recently on the M1 I failed to find an area for caravans. Most seem to
have no directions for caravans, one with brand new signs did have arrows
for caravans which took me back to the motorway!

In those that have caravan parking, the caravan spaces are often filled
with HGVs and there is a risk of being clamped if you use a vacant HGV
space (e.g. that guy at Cullompton last year who clamped the clampers) Yet
the service operators don't do a thing about the HGVs parked in the wrong
area that caused the problem in the first place.

Remind me. Why do I holiday in France every year?

If I was in that situation I'd probably try to plan the trip to the channel
port as a single hop then get a sleeper ferry to St Malo or something.

I moved from caravanning to a motorhome and that really shows up the
difference in attitude between France & the UK.

For France I've got a book with hundreds of free or very cheap places (aires
de camping car iirc) to stay in a camper van, most are provided by the
equivalent of the local council. Some are in spectacular countryside and
some in small towns/villages. In addition I pay £20 per year which gives
access to around 800 free places to stay on farms, vineyards and
smallholdings all over France (France Passion it's called).

Compare this to the UK where it's just continual hassle just to park for the
day at the beach with height restrictions, petty rules etc etc.

Andy,

Like you I find France very attractive and living on the south coast make at
least three visits a year. What we must bear in mind though is with a
similar population as the UK they have about three times the land. This
makes the provision of space for campsites and camping cars so much easier.
Also in my lifetime the French worker has always paid considerably more tax
than us British so public services will be better.

Regards
Dave.

Re: Overnight at motorway service areas
The PDF filie you are looking for is on the Caravan Club website under the
heading "NIGHT HALTS AT MOTORWAY SERVICE AREAS". There are 5 pages to the
file.
Dont ask me how I know I have never used a motorway overnight stop.

Re: Overnight at motorway service areas
Thanks Mike - that's the one! For others who want to know, the full address
is
http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/nr/rdonlyres/c05bb15b-4964-4b72-aa6f-10b8561fc9c1/0/nighthaltsonmotorwayserviceareas.pdf
I should have been able to find it, I'm a member of the club.

I've just been trying to find somewhere else to stay for a rest on the way
down from Lancashire on the overnight run to Dover. (M25 is like a country
lane at 3.00am!) We used to arrive at about 6.00am at the Caravan Club
Folkestone Racecourse site, have a few hours rest then go off early
afternoon for the ferry. But the site has now closed so an alternative short
rest place is needed. Service areas seemed a possible alternative. Any more
ideas?

Regards,
John B.

There's an excellent CCC certificated site on Singleton lane, Coldred.
Arrive and leave anytime, easy to come and go without disturbing others. £7
per night IIRC. Sorry, I don't have the number but I've never booked, just
turned up.
