French Petrol Pumps
When I last went to France I was unable to use my chip and pin card on
the pumps.

Has this altered?

How are the French diesel prices at present?

Don't know about card chip & pin but here is a site for French Fuel prices
http://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/

The site is French government run and updated regularly.

It is in French but should be easy to use.

Just tick the box for fuel type:-
Gazole = Diesel
GPL = Gas
SP95 = (Sans plomb), Petrol 95 octane

Type in your town into "Cherchez une commune" or the Department you are
interested in into "Selectionnez un department" and click the relevant
"Valider"or click on the map. Alternatively, click on the map to select
department and then select the town ""Commune" from the alphabetic list.

To the right-hand side of the opening page there is also a route planner.
However, I think that http://www.mappy.co.uk/ is better as you can do an
itinerary with road tolls in France.

According to a couple of quick searches on that site, diesel is cheaper
than petrol in France. Is this the same for the rest of mainland Europe,
and are we the only country in Europe where diesel is more expensive than
petrol?

No, not at all!

Here in Austria Diesel is about 5 Cent per liter more expensive than
petrol (91/95 octane), too.

And there are a few other countries else, according to
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/download/document/preise_in_europa.pdf

Re: French Petrol Pumps
I don't know about rest of Europe but diesel is cheaper in France following
the truckers protests of 2000. People power does seem to work in France.
The government there are often deflected from their ruling stance after a
reminder from the people that they govern for the people. A pity that the
UK government can't listen to us and remember that they are not our rulers.

Now it looks like the EU treaty business is still going ahead, at least the
UK government is still going to ratify, even after the Irish vote and
despite us being told that if any of the 27 countries voted against the
whole thing would fall. I suppose I should not be surprised.

Re: French Petrol Pumps
I was in France last weekend and prices for diesel were in the 1.40E to
1.60E per litre. The differential between petrol and diesel there has almost
disappeared petrol was about 0.10E per litre dearer, diesel used to be be
about 70% - 80% the price of petrol

Certainly the only one I have been in recently and I've been in Ireland,
France, Spain barbados and Portugal in the last few months where petrol has
been dearer then diesel.

As of yesterday afternoon, diesel at Auchan Cocquelles was ?1.409/L and
a cent more at Auchan Boulogne. It is around 1.449/L on motorway
services.

It's about the same in northern Belgium, but in the south and Luxembourg
as of Thursday last it was ?1.29/L - and that had gone up that day from
?1.24!!! As it is around ?1.56/L in Germany there is considerable
cross-border traffic for fill-ups.

Arrived home yesterday.
Used Visa Credit in Intermarche in Aunay-sur- Odon on 17 June (Garage hadn't
opened at 8 AM).
The pump took it in , it took a few verifications and pin number and
delivered Diesel OK. Price 1.42 Eur/litre.
The Intermarche and Champion were generally 15 cents/Lire cheaper than
Autoroutes.
Our cheapest diesel during a 10 day trip was 1.38Euros/Litre at Intermarche
in Pont-l'eveque near Deauville.
