A really good idea, but this one does not seem the answer.
If anyone does come up with a good forum that will be good. I will be out
of here in a flash.

Fuck off now then if you don't like it, you've contributed nothing to this
group with your couple of miserable posts.
I suggest you join the Darby & Joan club if you just want inane chat. There
are people who regularly post to this group offering worthwhile advice to
anybody who asks. I'll stand the bollocks, even from Mary Bloody Fisher,
rather than have it censored and turned into a self congratulatory forum of
red bucket using 5 metre rule activists sitting round their fruit bowls.

I agree with Bill, and who is doing the moderating? Who moderates the
moderators? I discovered Usenet, this newsgroup and a few others, about 8
years ago when I first went online. It has had its difficulties at times
but I love the access to the wealth of knowledge amongst its contributors
and the immediacy of that information. I have had a look at some of the
other forums but they look antediluvian by comparison to uk.rec.caravanning.

We're members of that, and the 365 off-shoot. Both are reasonable, but
more especially if you like rallies in fields ... ;)
No forums I've found yet come close to Usenet for both information and
diversity.

Very true but we welcome all those with an interest in caravanning and
I for one would prefer that they carry on being here whether I always
agree with them or not. As someone said in a recent post it's a long
time since we heard from Dave Fawthrop and even longer since Mhlife
contributed but in a way the group misses characters like them.

And yet Bill you also contribute to one of the most heavily moderated web
forums on the internet! I am a bit surprised we have not seen you on CT2 or
T&T which are two of the biggest and most informative web forums, you would
be
very welcome.
If I could also comment on some of the other posts about moderation.
Whilst I can't see how it could work on Usenet, is it such a bad thing?
Some of the language I see on this and other Usenet groups would certainly
not be tolerated and that and personal attacks are generally the cause of
most moderation on other forums. I also suggest that this is not the best
source of
information on our hobby. It may have been in the past but unfortunately
many of those
that had expertise have moved away from this group, some away completely but
others to web forums.

I do contribute to UKcampsite.co.uk but I have stopped even
considering posting on things which are opinion rather than clear
fact. What is more I have told the moderator by e-mail that the group
is cencsored and I have also put that in the forum ( it didn't stay
there long ). If you would let me have the web addresses for the other
two sites I will look at them, and probably contribute, but in the end
the really good thing about this group is that it is free from
censorship and if someone has a serious criticism of a place or a
company or anything else to do with caravanning they can print it and
know that it will not be removed. As a result if someone asks for
information they must know that the replies will be candid and honest
and that if there is something to be aware of that it will be said.

I rarely see the posts that people complain about they are filtered
quite successfully by Forte Agent 4 ( if anyone needs a copy and is
happy to accept pirated versions they are readily available free ).
This is done by filtering out any posts that go to more than two
groups and by dealing with others by killfiling them. What you find
then is that people who contribute regularly to this group in a
constructive way are never filtered but those who post once or twice
and always in an abusive way are never seen.

It used to be a brilliant place to get information and to a certain
extent it still is. We still get some wonderful proffesional input
from people like David Halley but sadly the likes of Tony Maris on
towbars and the like have gone, but then he retired and sold his
business so it's not too surprising. I have yet to find anywhere else
that gives better information, though for someone coming to it fresh
it must be quite a daunting task sifting the wheat from the chaff.

For those who don't mind spending $29 (~£15), you can look at download a
trial copy and then purchase from http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php
Personally, I've been using Agent since 0.9f and paying for the updates and
as a software developer, I don't approve of pirated software.

This is why (many years ago), I set up a site with all of the Frequently
Asked Questions on as the same questions and answers were appearing here
every couple of months. The site was originally a subdomain on Demon and is
now kept as a separate domain (www.caravanningnow.co.uk). The replies are
nearly all from postings to this group and have been kept up to date as
times have passed.
Richard
Web pages: http://www.caravanningnow.co.uk/ for caravanning,
http://www.rcole.org/ for my personal web site and
http://www.homeindorset.co.uk because I love the email address.

I know I am getting in deep water but here goes.
Richard, you have a fair point but I do not think uk.rec.caravanning is
solely about FAQs. This is such an interesting forum for all of us who love
caravanning in all its many and varied forms. I can talk about what I do in
Europe supported by others who do it in a similar or indeed a different way.
Bill Lord and several others talk about the CLs and the technical things
about weights etc. Mary likes to talk about the simple way she and spouse
do things and she has many friends. I'm sorry if I have not mentioned other
contributors but you know who you are. I just like it. It is a bit like
travelling on the bus which we use a lot since we got our free passes. On
the bus you have to mix with people with 'learning difficulties' mumbling to
themselves, yobs swearing, noisy kids, but in the main nice polite people of
all ages. A bit like Usenet. The real world.
Regards.
Dave.

Dave
I totally agree with what you say.
It used (5 years ago?) to be purely people asking a question (Where can I
find a local caravan breaker?), getting an answer then a month or two later
another person asking the same question (Where is my closest caravan
breaker?). It got to point where most 'regulars' had a text file of
standard answers, so when the question came up, it was a cut and paste job
to provide the response.
I guess that new users are more 'net aware and now Google for the question.

Agreed, Bill's posts are interesting.

Mary has learnt a lot since she started posting here and keeps on learning,
although occasionally she can use Usenet when email would be better
(although not for at least a year now, so perhaps she learnt that trick now
too).

You can set up filters that remove all of the scum (even in Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138).

Enough with the 'scum', already! - it ill becomes someone who steals other
people's work to put on his own (piss poor amateurish) website, to
denigrate others.
You're a thief - and that certainly makes you 'scum' in my book.
Now run off to your 'killfile', you sanctimonious little bastard..........

Re: a moderated discussion forum for caravanners and campers
"moderated" on the UK-SITES forum (at http://www.uk-sites.com/message_board.html
) simply means removing unrelated perverted abuse.
we have set up a caravan and campsite reviews section as well - where
we link up all comments (good or bad) to that site in the directory.
both these are new to UK-SITES and we welcome serious comments - again
good or bad.

Fact or fiction? If fact - a shame as he was one of the characters on here,
harmless and humorous and most offensive posts allegedly by him were by

I think you ought to apologise for that.
Everything on the website is correctly copyrighted, would you care to point
out what is stolen (perhaps under your real name and not posted through an
anonymous host such as uni-berlin.de?)

The duplicity deepens.
'Consent'?, from whom? Your website (if one must dignify that amateurish
cobble of HTML by such a description) purports to be the combined wisdom of
a tedious trio of sages (one of whom is yourself) who's finger wagging
statements of the bleedin' obvious make death by lying on a train track a
surprisingly attractive alternative to reading their drivel.
Yet you also state that the information has been garnered from this
newsgroup - thus, one might be forgiven for assuming that the only
contributors here are the unholy trio who so proudly (|and so inexplicably)
claim the credit.
The other possibility is that you and your accomplices have rephrased the
accumulated wisdom here, and regurgitated as your own work.
In that case your claim to have 'consent' is as bogus as the coma-inducing
'FAQ' itself.
