Lakes campsite recommendations
We are taking a week off in July, hoping to get the tent out for the 1st
time this year.

We normally head for Wales but can't be arsed with a long drive so looking
for recommendations for sites in The Lakes.

Needs include, parking next to tent, dog friendly preferably with nearby
good dog walking potential, reasonable sized pitches, nice toilets/showers
and as chav free as possible.

Cheers,
Rick

How far can you "be arsed"? i.e. where from? Perhaps the Peak district
might be another possibility?

Peak District? Glossop way?
We are in Blackburn, looking at 1hr/50 miles max, will travel further for
somewhere exceptional.

Mmm tricky. I can only suggest going to one of the main campsite
websites and hunting for yourself.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/

Chavs can be any where, and at any time, so I doubt we could predict a
chav-free week. I try to identify likely spots on a site when setting
up, and avoid that area, but there's no guarantee that a party might not
turn up and pitch next to you.

We stayed at Shell Island a couple of times last year, all was good except
the 'rangers' chasing scumbags around the site in the early hours of the
morning trying to kick them off.
I wondered if some sites attract 'this sort of thing' and whether some sites
have a better handle on it.

If anyone wants to make Peaks recommendations, I'd be interested in
storing away for future reference - it's right on our doorstep here in
Nottingham.

I know there's always the link to the website, but personal
recommendations are always nice. We're just back from a trip that
took in the Red Squirrel site in Glen Cloe (recommended here) which
was really lovely, and home to our tipi dwelling friends for nearly a
fortnight. They told us someone had just before they got there,
someone had had a wedding on the site - putting a marquee on one end
for the reception, and inviting their guests to stay in tents. Sounds
like a lovely idea!

After that, we moved onto the Camping and Caravanning site in
Scarborough, which was nice - perfectly maintained facilities, and
lots of them - but hellishly expensive over the bank hol weekend.
Pushing £100 for two people for nights in a tent on a sloping pitch.

C&CC site at Keswick.
Tents sited on the shore of Derwent Water. Good dog walks and site is
500 yards from town center.
Just home from a five night stay - will definitely be back there
again.

Sounds good.
Do they allow barbecues (off ground) outside the tents?

Well fingers crossed.

Just another question (I will be phoning them tomorrow but in the
meantime)...

Are you a C&CC member?
I note they charge £6 for non members, is this per night? Per person?

Why would you want a barbecue INSIDE the tent ;-)

Yes, I am a member, and an old person, so it cost my wife and I £13.10
a night (mid season up to 10th July), which includes electric hook up.
The non member site fee is £6 per pitch per night, but according to my
book, a member back packer is £5.20 and a non member back packer is
£6.60

Alas it was fully booked, obviously a popular site, I expected them to have
space with the weather being crap and it being the week before the school
hols.
