In a similiar vein, I was at a local Council meeting and on eof my
colleagues who has "green credentials" started pushing the need to put
solar/wind powered street lights in to reduce our carbon footprint, or
something.

I costed the difference for consideration if we decide to replace the
existing lamps as they deterioate over time with the Solar option. Cost
abdout 1800 quid, conventional, 180 quid. Not a change I would make at
present, you can buy a lot of juice for £1600, and I suspect the renewable
lamps will need the battery changing on regular basis too.
