Ike's beginning to hit Houston
The situation in the Houston, Corpus Christi, Texas area is beggining
to worsen rapidly now.

Anyone that is going to try to ride this hurricane out is nuts.
There's already water coming over the seawalls and flooding homes.
This is just the beginning. To stay there is suicide. There's at
least 12 hours before the main force of this hurricane is going to
hit.

Here, it's raining just as hard or harder than there. We may flood
here on the flatlands today, just like what's been happening in the
UK. Steady, constant heavy rain fueled by a cold front from the
north and meeting the warm, high moisture air from the Gulf.
Fortunately, unlike yourselves, we don't have much worry about
harvesting crops, now.

I feel for you folks. Those in England and southeast Scotland can't
be having much fun. I guarantee you, we are soaked now, too. Ike
is circumferencing the entire Gulf of Mexico as I write this email.
It's a huge storm. Anyone who is idiotic enough to try to ride this
storm out, is gonna be sorry.

I hope people have enough Common Sense to get out of there, now.
They will not survive, if they try to stay.

It seems that some are staying.

Houston area residents get what they need to stay or go
Many endure long lines and rising tensions at packed stores:

Despite evacuation order, 1,000 remain in Galveston jail:

There is still some conflict from the hurricane models as to where is being
hit hardest.
The last evacuation of Houston caused more deaths than the hurricane did.
None of this is as simple as it can look from a few hundred / thousand miles
away.

Peter, it's getting worse and worse and fast. I have loved ones
there and can't communicate with them. at all.
So, this is getting personal fast, too. I hope Michelle has left,
too. Whether you all realize it or not, I've gotten to know some
good people on this group and even though we've argued, bickered and
chastized each other, you are all important. This hurricane can do
serious harm to the USA, as it develops. We are now even flooding
here, creeks and smaller streams overflowing, and I live smack-dab in
the middle of the USA. We're gonna get more rain in the next few
days, after Ike makes landfall and moves on up the Mississippi
River. Just what we don't need right now.
Yeah, sure, we'll probably be fine for the rain, cum October, but it
sure bollickses up the things we need to be doing at this time.
Grabbing a beer and heading for the shop on a rainy day, ......needed
to be done before cold weather, anyway.

Well, Ike has hit New Orleans, now, again. Anyone living on a Gulf
Coast is at risk with this storm. Here I sit in Kansas, and thanking
God for that.

http://www.nola.com/hurricane-ike/index.ssf/2008/09/hurricane_ike_surge_breaches_o.html

We're so soaked up today, it'll take a week or more to dry out.

That isn't going to happen, because IKE is coming in here, too. I'm
gonna go make some additional preparations.
They have to be done, just to keep us dry, and to prevent some real
property damage from all the wet.

This is the shits.

Yes.

The weather radar image for Dallas/Fort Worth Local Radar shows light rain at
the moment:
http://www.accuweather.com/radar-local.asp?anim=still&type=&site=KFTW

The image from Houston/Hobby Airport Local Radar is scarily different. Ike has
arrived:
http://www.accuweather.com/radar-local.asp?anim=still&type=&site=KHOU

The images are about 10 to 20 minutes old.

Oh, Peter, it's straight into Galveston. That's bad news. But
Thanks for your post. This storm could be a back-breaker. I hope
and Pray it doesn't happen out as bad as it looks, but I'm not
optimistic. Our world has been hit with one catastrophe after
another, this year. There is no way to fight these natural
disasters, but to pick up pieces and rebuild. The costs go far
beyond my little guy comprehension. But, I see no point in
rebuilding in areas that succumb to such Acts of Mother Nature.

I really hate to say this, but our whole economy here is on the line
with this storm. Houston is the fourth largest city in the USA and
built on a flood plain. As Ike progresses inwards, his effects will
be felt thoughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri,
Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, and the upper Northeast States. Our
harvests are on the verge of beginning. I hope and pray it won't get
as bad as you are experiencing in your own counties recently, but I am
not optimistic at all. A farmer can't harvest a crop without solid
ground. Looking at the web, the rates of water in the air are
enormous.....all over the USA right now. An early frost, a simple
cold front, and it's all over but the shouting.

Re: Ike's beginning to hit Houston
It's going to be worse than they said. The most populated areas are
being hit hard. Still too early to determine the real extent of the
damage, but it isn't sounding good. Bayous flooding everything. Rain
still falling at the rate of 1"+ per hour.
This is going to be one doozy of a storm when it finally passes, in
terms of damage. People are absolutely nuts for going out....downed
trees, downed power lines and water everywhere. Why on Earth people
go out to see this is just crazy.

You can see this for yourselves, just as we are doing here, on:

This was one hell of a storm, Peter,. It's going to be expensive.
Very expensive. Mother Nature can do more to any one country than
any politicians. If She wants to teach a lesson, She will. She
did.

She's already taught your greedy arable farmer's a Good One, too, this
year.
