A case of mistaken identity
Pat's Note: The sharp eyed will have spotted this in The Guardian
today

"Pat Gardiner, used to work in the port industry until he decided to
fend for himself back in the Seventies. He started a self-sufficiency
website (www.goselfsufficient.co.uk) in his spare time. He thinks
people feel out of control of their lives now, in the same way as he
did in the Seventies. 'Recession, price inflation, uncertainty. The
instinct to batten down the hatches and look after yourself, leave the
world outside, is deeply ingrained,' he says. 'You may think it's a
dream but you can actually do it.'
It was in a long article about "greenshifters"
The quote is reasonable enough and from me, but the website quoted is
wrong. That is not me.
Somebody came along much later wanting to create a commercial site and
used a disturbingly similar name. to a successful non-commercial one.
The Guardian mistake proves that even Britain's top newspapers can be
fooled by similar names.
The webmaster's text suggests that he is in no hurry to make money
and perhaps hopes to build up his site using income from advertising,
one day to realise his hard work by selling on. Why not indeed?
The obvious first check by the potential buyer's financial advisors
will throw up a similar site (mine) predating
www.goselfsufficient.co.uk
They will doubtless approach the owners, as I assume I won't be about
by then, of www.go-self-sufficient.com for some kind of letter of
comfort.
Such things come at a price, especially when the now provable
confusion might have been thought to have been caused by insufficient
thought when naming the newer site.
When you are building a house, you have to make sure that the
foundations are sound. It is when you come to sell that the problems
emerge.
You can see why my next site will be "Founding and running a
successful business."
