PMWS - A sorry tale
Pat's Notes: NADIS Veterinary Report and ForecastAugust 20 has just
been published. It covers the period from mid June to mid July.
There is a lot about Circoviruses.
PMWS is mentioned three times is separate contexts. The associated
PCV2, nine times, PDNS once, PRRS once.
Does this mean things are getting worse?
Well, they are no better.
The relative scarcity of hard data from a un-notified and largely
covered-up epidemic allows for no more precision.
This comment reveals a refreshing honesty about the vaccination
campaign:
"Many vets comment that whilst vaccination had commenced, it was still
too early to judge results."
Things are probably no worse.
But there is a growing recognition that it is extremely dangerous to
underplay circovirus outbreaks or their effects. Whether these be
merely financial, animal welfare related or the even more serious
prospect that human disease may have been caused by the heavy
prescription of antibiotics on pig farms in the recent past.
The private vets are at long last recognising the seriousness of the
situation and their culpability in allowing themselves to be bullied
and intimidated by corrupt government veterinarians.
The change in attitude is subtle, but it is there. The sense of
openness will increase.
Given the circumstances that is not only prudent but an absolute
necessity.
The excuse that "I was told to do it" was exposed as being
insufficient as a defence more than a half century ago.
You can read the full report for yourselves.
