What does this make?
Found a recipe in a leather case which housed an old surveyers tape and
wondered what the resulting mix was for.

The ingredients were:

Brimstone
Train oil
Turpentine.

Anybody know what it is for?

Cheers
Jane

Possibly a treatment for woodworm. A mixture of rosin, Brimstone and
Train oil (known as "white stuff", to distinguish it from "brown stuff",
i.e. tar and pitch) was used to varnish undersides of ships to stop the
entrance of worm.

Whale oil according to google

>Turpentine.

The real stuff for painting.

Sulphur dissolves in turps and the oil might just be a carrier, so I'd
guess a paint on fungicide.

I wondered about it as a fumigant when burned in a wick lamp but think
the turps would make the flame too sooty, not to mention the
carcinogens.

Why sell it cheap? It probably is being sold already under some fancy
brand name.
