Deadline for claiming back business travel expenses
I have a load of business mileage which I forgot to claim for, going
back to Oct 2006.

What is the maximum age of a business expense which I can submit?

Depends on who you are submitting them to. The business may have a
rule that they have to be submitted monthly and not allow you to
submit anything earlier because either may not be able to recover the
expenses from clients.

If you are wanting to include them on your own self-employed part of a
tax return for 2007-2008 there will be no problem.

You really need to give more information to avoid replies giving every
possible option.

The company is my own limited company.

The reason I ask re a deadline is because I don't want to trigger an
HMRC enquiry by putting in expenses from too far back. Nothing to
hide, but equally don't want the hassle.

My accountant is cheap but not great - he has made a few mistakes
which triggered HMRC attention and even though the tax in question was
minimal, the stuff dragged on for ages. So I like to get a 2nd opinion
here, first :)

To help us answer....

1. What is the "accounting date" of the last set of accounts submitted to
(a) Companies House, and (b) HMRC ?

2. Are you claiming (from your Company) mileage at a rate within the HMRC
threshold (40p / 25p) ?

3. Is your Company VAT registered? (The mileage claim can disturb your
previous input VAT claims, too)

31 Dec 2006 for both a and b, AFAIK
Yes
Yes

In that case, I would be inclined to treat the Oct/Nov/Dec 06 mileage as
claimed slightly late (Jan 07) - so include them in 07 a/c's. And obv a
corresponding Cr at 31/12/07.

As they're within the 40p limit, they won't affect your SATR for 07 nor 08.

And the potential i/p VAT reclaim can be c/f to your next VAT100 (assuming
you have suitably dated fuel receipts). Make sure you use the AFRs for the
correct periods - they've been up and down like the proverbial in the last
year or two. You'll need to include the "late" 07 VAT in Drs at 31/12/07.

Thank you very much!
