Well done, HMRC!
I think it's safe to say I have been the biggest critic of HMRC on
this newsgroup so I am delighted to report that they have completed a
VAT registration within eight days of it being submitted.

I just had one done quite quickly as well. Followed a week later by a letter
saying they wanted further information or they would cancel my application!
