Rev, Smoke, Bang
Blimey. A Laguna diesel running on it's own engine oil and expiring is
quite an impressive show :-).

Surely not one from years ago that was sent out of the factory with the
wrong dipstick?

You can minimise dmage by putting it in a high gear and stalling it.

It was a not-that-old one. They have a reputation for the turbo seals
failing and doing this.

Official VAG apprentice training says to pour water into the air intake
if possible. If not, evacuate workshop!

Open bonnet, remove air intake pipe, choke the intake?

Do they rev up to a point that bits start flying out of the block then?

Blimey. I'd have thought you could get hydrostatic lock with that?

Yup. But at least all the buggered bits stay in the same place. Mainly.

I assume it just seizes up when all the engine oil is used up - unless it
over-revs to the point bits fly out of the side, like I said before. I
suppose when it gets really hot the engine would make a nice explosive
mixture when mixed with air?

A piston seizure at those sort of revs will normally cause the piston to
shatter. That's if a con-rod hasn't already broken of course.

I'd guess, and I'm willing to admit that I may be wrong, that the
overspeed kills the engine long before the sump runs out of oil.

The only time I've known of the "throw a bucket of water over it"
technique being used, the engine got rebuilt. I don't know what damage
was done, but at least the block was intact.

Bad form replying to ones own post but I fecked the map up.

The lights are at 'B', if anyone is really that interested.

That's pretty much what I thought. If you can't stop the engine straight
away, I can't see the poing of hanging around anywhere within range of
flying bits of metal.
