Goodmans 7103 car CD-radio
My 'new' 106 has one of these fitted, but no instruction book.
Having trouble getting it to auto-search for stations, it won't find
the national BBC ones. Am I doing something wrong? Are these sets
known for faults? Any advice much appreciated, thanks.

30 years or more ago, the name "Goodmans" was synonomous with a quality
product. Sadly, now, it's another word for Chinese crap. It works, but
that's about all that can be said about it. If it ever does go wrong, don't
imagine for one moment that you will find anyone in the service business,
prepared to waste time on it ... :-\

Yeah, agreed. They made very good speakers in the fifties and sixties. Still
got one or two real Goodmans speakers in the loft somewhere. Its gone the
same way as many of the good names and now their name is used to badge cheap
crap.

They were still making quality speakers at the end of the 70s, as I
recall my father ordering some through his firm for me.
But around that time many of the old traditional British electronics
"names" were in financial trouble and got sold off to asset strippers.
So names like Goodmans, Bush, Pye, and many others, once a byeword for
quality, ended up being stuck on Chinese crap (not that all Chinese
goods are crap, but a high proportion are).

Sven, thankyou for the link! Arfa, yes, I used to have a Goodmans
'Module 90' hifi about 30 years ago, 45 watts / channel, sounded
great fed by a Garrard SP25 with Shure pickup, playing Floyd, Cream
and other LP's of that era. All from Laskys, Tot. Court Rd..

Ha! Lasky's. That takes me back. Tottenham Court Road. Lisle Street. Henry's
Radio. Happy days. I ran an SP25 for years with a Goldring (GL75 was it ?)
cartridge. When the Garrard DD35 (I lay claim to inventing the direct drive
turntable, but that's another long story ...) was released, my wife bought
me one as a birthday present. I Have a Shure M75ED2 cartridge in that, and
it is still in service to this day. Likewise with Floyd (poor old Rick
Wright ...) Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zep and all the other 'usual suspects'.
My speakers were home constructed using the famous EMI 13" x 8" bass and 7"
x 5" midrange drivers (which I think came from Lasky's) and an Eagle dome
tweeter with Eagle 3 way crossover units. Infinite baffle cabinets made from
high density chipboard, damped with fibreglass loft insulation, and faced
with that wonderful foil backed veneer that you used to get in door-sized
pieces, call 'Rollwood" as I recall. It actually used to come rolled up like
Fablon. I still have those speakers and they are still in service !!

My 'Module 90' expired, now have a bit newer 30-yr-old Hitachi amp.
I think, GL was Goldring Lenco, a turntable. Cartridges, G800,
etc? My EMI 13 x 8's tweeters were in similar cabinets (plans from
Practical HiFi?) , the front round the apertures covered in thin
foam, then 'Rexine' stetched over, for that 'pro' look. Sold them,
have Celestions now. Current T-table, a Dual 506, as old as the
amp., with M75ED, and we still play some of the LP's!

Yes, you're right. GL is Goldring Lenco, and yes again, I think you are
right that the GL75 was a whole deck, and the common Goldring cartridge
*was* the G800. You've got a better memory than me ...
It's what everyone went over to as a budget magnetic, when they got an amp
with a high sensitivity phono input. Prior to that, I used either a Decca
Deram or, I seem to recall, an Acos ceramic. I can't remember where I got
the plans for the EMI cabs. I do, however, clearly remember building them.
It was in the summer of '75 when we were first married. I built them in the
back garden of our first little house. It was my very first DIY project. The
wife never really liked them as they half filled the little lounge ... 30
odd years on, they now sit under the work surfaces in my computer room, and
still work just as well as they ever did !
