Help: new cat converter
MK4 golf 1.6s 16v 2001

My cat has been on its last legs and needs replacing a call to vw and they
said its a complicated job and called me back with a quote of £634 inc parts
labour and vat. *gulp*

Called GSF car parts and the part on its own is £112.80.

Now the vw service guy said they had to drop the subframe ? and modify the
the exhaust to get a new one on. Not sure if this is true or not ?

Having never touched a cat before I simply thought it was a case of removing
heatshield, unbolting cat, bolt in new one maybe with new gaskets ? and job
done. Perhaps wishful thinking ?

No chance I'm going to vw with this problem.

Reason for new part is my cat on acceleration rattles like a fooka :) and is
driving me made and then I guess its chucking our more emissions so a
possible MOT fail.

I'm hoping someone on here know about changing a cat on the 1.6 01 golf and
would be a superstar and sharing :)

Advice welcomed

Dealer price, what do you expect?

Go to a local independant tyre and exhaust centre? There is an excellent
one near me on Teesside but I suspect that might be a bit of a drive ;)

Drop into your friendly local motor factors and get them to recommend
someone, maybe?

I'm basically saying avoid the dealer because they are expensive, and
avoid Kwik Fit because my local one tried to rip my mother off over a
set of rear dampers, and couldn't balance a tyre on my Astra after
trying three times.

Ahh off course. I shall find a local specialist. My local garage giggled at
me and said not a chance as its half a days work and not worth their time
which I found odd, maybe a i missed the joke or they don;t want the work.
