petrol   
does anyone know if lead free petrol deteriates if left for a few months
even in a sealed container and if so what happens if you try to use it

Yes, badly and quite quickly - within a few months. If you leave it long 
enough it'll turn into a kind of varnish which will gum up various fuel 
system components. Assuming nothing's gummed up too badly, the car'll 
still run, but it'll do so badly until new fuel's put in.
