Triumph gearboxes
We haven't had a thread about Triumph gearboxes for a few weeks, so
here's one.
Anybody know if the Dolomite Sprint shared gearboxes with the Stag?
Sound unlikely, I know, but I've just been comparing two side by side
and the only difference I can see is the input shaft, which is longer
and thinner on the Sprint.
The clutch slave cylinders are on different sides, but as the actuating
rod is the same, they can be moved to whichever side you want.
Otherwise, everything looks the same, even down to the J-type overdrive.
I'm not talking about the standard Dolomite, which had a totally
different gearbox.
I'm interested because I've just sold a Stag 'box on eBay and have been
contacted by someone in the States who's desperate for some parts for
one. I don't have another Stag 'box but have just bought 3 Sprint 'boxes
for the grand total of 11p! (One has an engine attached, but I don't
think that's up to much.)

The box is the same as the 2500 also its in the adapter ring between the
engine and the GBox.

That's good to know. Thanks Rob.
So presumably it could also be persuaded to fit a Vitesse engine (though
may be a bit bulky to fit between the chassis rails of the actual car).
Looks like I may be getting some good value from my 11p!

I've been told that the Stag and 2500 boxes, whilst appearing identical, are
different internally. Something about heavier bearings, but I don't know for
sure as I've never had cause to take either apart.

It wouldn't have been different synchro rings, would it? I know that
Triumph beefed up the ones in the Vitesse/GT6 box during production, so
perhaps they did the same with other gearboxes too.
When I have a minute, I'll pull the dodgiest looking Sprint 'box apart
to see what's what.

I have no information on Sprint or Stag gearboxes, but I have had a
quick look in the Stanpart Parts List for MkII 2000 and 2.5PI and there
are only a few differences. A different front oil seal, and a different
3rd gear retaining washer seem to be dependent on whether it is 2000 or 2.5.
Then there are different mainshafts, depending on whether there is no
overdrive, a Type J overdrive or a Type A overdrive fitted. And there
appears to be an alternative input shaft used in different (unspecified)
gearbox numbers.
I don't mind scanning the pages and e-mailing them if you want them.
They will tell you the part numbers and show you the exploded diagrams.

yep
And there

The clutch plate splines are different.

I'm OK on that one, the Sprint had a J-type, the same as the Stag 'box
I've just sold.
One thing though, the label on the Sprint overdrive has orange writing.
I may be mixing it up with something else, but seem to remember hearing
that the colour coding means something or other...

That's the bit I'd spotted. The Sprint input shaft is a long, thin one
with a much narrower splined area for a different clutch plate (as Rob
points out).

Thanks Jim, that would be extremely useful. Take your time, I've a load
of things to finish before starting to strip one of the 'boxes down.
oss108 (at) bangor.ac.uk will get to me.

It probably won't be today because I have got a lot of other things to
do, but I should get the scans to you by the weekend.

Sent this afternoon, Willy
If they don't turn up in your mailbox, let me know, and I will try
another method of getting them to you.

They've arrived and very useful they look too.
