Back in the good old days (that would be yesterday) when I was not
posting through Google (ohhh, and do I have rants about *that*, my
dears) OE was still inserting its usual >>>s.
Please excuse lack of netiquette, I have no idea how my posts are
going to appear as regards snippage and so on. I'm still fuming about
Google's "we need to know more about you before you can post, please
complete the profile". Good gods, it's like being harassed by small
persistent insects!

That phenomenon has been coming and going lately with my use of OE. It seems
to be a function of the posts to which I reply. I don't know of anything to
do except adopt another method of signaling the change of speakers.

I was going to say that meself. I don't use outlook distress, er,
express[1], but I've seen others who use it having exactly the same
problem in other groups - some posts are quoted fine, others have no
quoting markers added at all and the posters swear up and down that
they haven't changed settings from one post to the next.
[1] I know no one will believe me but that really was a typo. <g>

I don't use it as a newsreader, but try this:
Tools -> Options
Send tab.
Under News sending format, make sure Plain text is ticked. Click on
Plain Text Settings button and make sure the Indent blah blah blah box
is ticked with > chosen as the character.

And if that don't work, you'll have to do what I do: look for the
longest line of text to find out where the wrap point is, then
manually insert the >s, while remembering to hit return BEFORE the
wrap point, and then tidy up as you go.
Of course, the other alternative is to start hunting out new
newsreaders. ;)

Heh. This is why I used a gmail account (or ten) to sign up with. Ok,
so it doesn't stop them wanting to know all kinds of crap, but for
whatever I wanna do, I only need to do it the once (while setting up
the eaddy). :)

Well, the server's back up now (according to the forum posts, somebody
reported it down on Friday, but whoever took the call didn't make the giant
cognitive leap to "pass this on to the people who are capable of switching
it back on again") so hopefully I shan't need google any more.

Why change to a different unfamilier client when you can fix the one you are

Because IMO FF is better.
Just with respect to hack attacks MS IE is the prime target.

Thunderbird.

As for email, I use gmail which is pretty good IMO. Needs only a web
interface.

Yes, I was being facetious, apologies for not pointing that out. As I
understood it Jo was asking about a news client, specifically.
Mentioning FireFox was perhaps not as useful a suggestion as it
usually is.

Very prrobably but the real question is it as aesphetically pleasing and as
friendly as IE?

Try OE-QuoteFix. It sputs the >>> back in, and puts the cursor below the
rest of the text. It can do other, fancier, things, but thsoe two features
are good enough.
Download from many places, here's one:
