[ot] Go me!
I appear to have found a job (on a sort of as-and-when basis, anyway),
and our local friendly councillor tells us we got our allotment site!
Actually, I could make this vaguely on topic and wonder if a spate of
good luck is bound to attract bad or whether that's
superstition/conditioning/West of Scotland 'don't get above yourself'
syndrome. :-)

Thank you. :-) I'm just as pleased actually that a) I got an interview
and b) apparently I got on OK in it since they called me back that
afternoon. Nice boost to the confidence that.
Councils aren't very rapid when it comes to organising interviews
though, are they? The closing date for this job was the 3rd November,
and I'd assumed that they weren't interested as I didn't hear from
them until a week or so ago.

Oh very much so :-D
And well done from me too. We have allotments but their locations scare me.
I have a fear of marauding gangs of chav lads.

Do they maraud there a lot? We're anticipating some problems with
drunken teens because our site is in a park, but hopefully not too
much and this is a remarkably chav-free area (there's a few who try it
on, of course, but generally they're OK). There's usually someone else
around on an allotment site anyway, plus you would have a useful
variety of long sharp implements nearby if any gangs of chavs did hove
into view. I'd have thought property damage and petty theft would be
more of a problem than outright intimidation of tenants.

Well now. We've to sign for it and so on (but we now have a bank
account and can apply for charity status, yay us). We've to plough it,
or otherwise disturb the weeds and grass and the ground, fence it, get
some bits of tree trimming done, lay it out, get paths done, plant the
hedge, get gates, organise the water supply (there's a pipe there
somewhere, dagnabbit. Perhaps I should take up dowsing) and otherwise
get started. That's before we even have to handle the membership
lists, fees and whatnot, figure out what community groups to invite
and do so, sort out insurance, funding, Green Gym and so on. <:-/ So,
er... I may not have time to grow any veg. ;-)

Doesn't that depend on whether you consider winning a PS3 to be a Good

Means paying for it though, and I don't see why I should when Pipex're
s'posed to be giving us one as part of our ADSL package - just a shame
the damn thing never works. Besides, I don't think I'd ever convince
Nick that paying for =extra= Internet access'd ever be a Good Thing -

Quite a bit yeah - we live in Chav-central and the allotments are all near
big estates with a lot of social housing. They are pretty brazen here.

Yeah damage and theft/burglary are bigger problems and a lot of people have
given up trying to keep chickens etc cos there was a spate of attacks
(kicking them to death or ripping heads off and leaving the mess for the
allotment holder to find on their return).
I find it all a bit off-putting so although it may be a more limited option
with lack of space and poor light levels but the back yard and pots will
have to do.

My mum's old allotment site, in the middle of one of those *very posh*
bits of housing, had a big problem with shed break-ins and fires. Got
to admire the roaming instinct of the common chav, I suppose, they're
prepared to travel quite a way to cause mischief.

Heh. Shouldn't be as bad as all that, mind you. Still waiting to
officially break the news to everyone but I think that'll have to wait
until the chairman gets back from France. We've been unofficially told
now by a councillor and the head of something very relevent, so we

Well there we go - I got a knockback for the other job I applied for.
There were two posts going for the one I interviewed for the other
day, and I only got one of them. Was rejected for the other today. ;-)
But yeah, I've kind of grown up to expect bad luck after good, so it
can't be that localised a thing really. Perhaps it's simply that a
minor setback seems larger after something good?

Huh - just about. Thing is I worked on one of those initiatives out in the
woolly back villages (where they are chavvier than most!) and I realised
that no-one had asked the teens what THEY wanted. It was a bunch of
middle-aged middle-class types deciding what was 'good' for them. Without a
sense of ownership of a project disaffected teens have no incentive to
protect 'whats theirs'. Besides they enjoy excessive drinking, drug abuse
and violence. The ones I've asked actually like this behaviour, they get a
buzz from it and are reluctant to try any new kind of buzz because they
would need to alter their world view rather radically to accept it.

Hell yeah - my dad's in a posh bit but we get roaming gangs from the
surrounding estates robbing and causing shit.

Indeed - I think it also comes down to checking my gardening books for what
would be suitable in light-limited spaces. I'm going to see if the flat roof
on the bathroom extension can be used if I put a suporting frame there -
probably more trouble than its worth mind.

Yeah well. *sigh* There's a surprising amount of enthusiasm and
dedication in even the chavviest teen, if someone manages to hit upon
the thing they're interested in.

At the time, yeah.

Well if there's nothing else to do... <:-/ Hey, if they were just
going to go around punching each other that'd be OK by me, but it's
the numpties who decide weapons are good and that hassling bystanders
is alright who cause the damage.

My mum's house is in a dry area, basically a commuter suburb since
when it was built. They have a lane at the end of their block that
runs down to the riverbank, with a walkway to other streets and a
local park. Great place to go and drink and shout a lot, and it seems
to be getting progressively more hairy there. Used to be as dull as
ditchwater, great place for kids to grow up and all that. We're not
quite seeing the same thing here, but since there are hordes of kids
and a lot of olds there are going to be a *lot* of teens in a few
years time. I'm comforting myself with the thought that there's a good
chance I'll know a fair few of them, and I'm not above clipping those
I know round the ear if they get lippy. <g>

Hmm. Considering some plants grow well while partially shaded by
others there may be more than there seems.

Might be. Is there a window above your extension or would you need to
go up a ladder to get to the plants?
While we're on plants again, anyone know how to care for poinsettias?
I bought one as a gift and it's throwing off its leaves in an alarming
manner. The green ones all fell off, the red ones are limp and sad
looking. Has the plant had it totally?

I may well move too when the German server subscription comes up for
renewal, every year I end up scrabbling around for my BT Click&Buy
details. It's the only thing I pay with that, and I always misplace

This is a fair approximation of what mine does in the morning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMXCuW9LDps
(the animator HAS to own a cat!) - however she's also worked out that
if she sits on the squishiest bit of my stomach and faces my toes she's
in exactly the right spot to pummel my bladder, which usually gets me
out of bed pretty quickly!

I love that. Round here we have taken to saying 'mow' when we're
hungry. <g>

Clever one, that cat.
I played the cat here some of the other videos, the ones called
'psycho cat' and the like. He nearly raised an ear.
