How to Get Life
How to Get Life
"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words
that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63
The flesh. From the moment of our birth, it drives us and preoccupies us. We
are motivated to satisfy its needs and desires. So powerful is this
influence, that much of the world seems obsessed with the pleasures and
cravings of the flesh. But Jesus warned that the promises of the flesh are
an illusion. We must realize that the flesh "profits nothing"! While
everything associated with the flesh seems to answer our problems, it's of
no help in advancing the things that really matter. Even when the attributes
of our flesh seem to offer us every advantage, they provide no advantage at
all-for the flesh counts for nothing. No profit at all!
So, how do we get real life? How can we experience things that do profit and
do last? Jesus says the answer is receiving life from the Holy Spirit and
the words Jesus spoke. As we focus on the realm of the Spirit, people may
mock us and say we're crazy. We can be tempted to submit to the desires of
the flesh and be drawn away by the things of this world. Yielding to the
flesh, we can abandon our relationship with the Lord and our pursuit of the
Spirit.
This is why we must renew our commitment to be led by the Holy Spirit and to
put to death the deeds of the flesh (Colossians 3:5). Our lives should be
shaped by the words of Jesus and the principles found in the Bible. Why?
Because they provide the path to real life. They alone can give true
discernment and wisdom. They help us stay on course and train us to make
good decisions. They give us the right priorities and take away our burdens
and worries.
Today, don't let the flesh control your life! Surrender to the Holy Spirit.
Fill your mind with God's Word. Let Him give you His perspective and show
you real life in Him.
Pray:
Father, forgive me for following the desires of my flesh. I surrender to
Your Spirit. May Your Word dominate my heart and mind. Thank you for giving
me real life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
