Moderatorial Note: Posters on manual after charter infraction
One of the more welcome consequences of having a moderation team is
that posts waiting for manual moderation generally get processed much
quicker than they used to. That's particularly valuable for new
contributors to the group, who aren't yet on free access, as it means
that they don't suffer long delays before having their posts appear
(or getting a rejection message, if appropriate). But, for those who
are on manual as a result of charter infraction, that's a less
desirable side effect as the posting delay from being on manual is as
much a part of the "punishment" as having to have all your posts
checked first.
As can be seen from a comparison of this month's and last month's
posting stats, the creation of the moderation team has led to one
person in particular dominating the group, despite being on manual
moderation throughout.
I have, therefore, made a slight change to the moderation software, so
that posts from anyone on manual moderation as the result of a charter
infraction[1] will not normally[2] be approvable until 24 hours have
passed since they reached the moderbot[3].
Anyone responding to someone who is on manual, therefore, should bear
that in mind and not expect to see an immediate response.
This will not affect new contributors who are in the early stages of
gaining free access. Their posts will be approvable immediately on
arrival at the moderbot.
[1] In terms of poster statuses, that's those classed as "penitent".
[2] It's overridable, but I don't foresee it being overridden often,
if at all.
[3] I'm using the arrival time, rather than the article posting date,
to avoid any possibility of someone trying to fiddle it by changing
their own system clock time or it being inadvertently subverted by a
faulty news server.

Seems to me like a reasonable move.

I'm a little surprised that Jeff hasn't posted since this announcement
and there appear to be no articles in the queue from him (at least
looking at http://www.ukrc.info/moderation/ ). Does this change mean
that the articles from penitents[1] are only visible on that web page
after 24 hours - if so it makes it hard for people who are on manual to
know whether their post is queued and is likely to result in lots of
multiple posts!
I approve of the principle though!

No; the public website will show them as queued in the usual way. Jeff
genuinely hasn't posted anything (or, at least, hasn't posted anything
that reached the moderbot) since yesterday lunchtime. That was nearly
three hours before I made the change.
