This has taken a little time to get here[1]... I spent around 4 years quite a few years ago as a member of the Scargill community - which ran a Christian conference centre in the Yorkshire dales. It has recently announced its closure - somewhat abruptly - and is moving to a virtual community (see http://scargillhouse.co.uk/ ) 50 years ago in a notionally Christian society, those values were best expressed by coming away from the hustle and bustle and reflecting on the world. In the 21st century post modern world, those values can best be expressed by engaging with projects within our urban and rural communities. The new Foundation is an opportunity to do precisely that and I am very excited at the path we have decided to take There's inevitably been recriminations and a save scargill site http://savescargill.wordpress.com/ has appeared This is encroaching on Debbie's thesis but in view of the wide thumbs down - at least in terms of existing Scargill supports to the virtual community idea - I wondered to what extent this newsgroup's virtual community can model what the exsiting scargill trustees see as their vision for scargill and to what extent the virtual community is too weak to offer the vision and support whaich the centre used to provide Robert [1] not least because news.individual.net or the moderbot appears to have eaten the first version -- Links and things http://rmstar.blogspot.com/

I thought (wrongly it seems) that they were owned by the Bradford diocese. Alan

I spoke to one member of community when I was there in July and we could only see a hotel wanting a base for wedding with a splendid place to carry them out as a possible buyer. Cards are being held very close to the chest - I assume for financial reasons. The save-scargill discussions have mooted Lee Abbey but I can't see it taking less than £6 million to buy and modernise the site (it needs a lot of bringing up to date) Robert -- Links and things http://rmstar.blogspot.com/
