Importance of server location
I have a number of sites, some .com, .net, .co.uk and a couple of .fr
none of which are particularly region specific in terms of the audience
they are addressed at so does it really matter where they are hosted ?
Reason I ask is that the hosting company I am using in France for the
majority, whilst cheap, is not the most reliable and sometimes it is
difficult to debug a problem because you can't be sure if it is the code
or the server that is at fault.
What is the advantage of having a .co.uk hosted in the UK, a .fr hosted
in France ?

From my experience it's primarily the search engines. When you are given the
option to search for sites in your country only, Google seems to determine
this by host location and domain suffix.
I can't get UK recognition by metadata on a .com domain hosted in US, but my
.co.uk domain hosted in Denmark does.
So if .fr is your TLD you should be fine to have a host anywhere. One.com
are stable and cheap but it is no-frills.

I have a site with One.com and I find it a bit slow.

Like I say, no-frills. I don't keep crackguitar with them anymore as there's
audio & video now on there and they do not rate for that bitrate. (CG is on
the US host). I find it fine for bog-standard static stuff.

Fair enough, but I don't equate 'no frills' for 'slow'.
I would recommend their hosting as a cheapo play host for people wanting to
learn or for little personal sites. IIRC, it cost me £9 for a year. Cant
complain, and I'm not. I'm getting pretty much what I paid for.
And now I think about it, my site has never, AFAIK, been down. So they must
be pretty stable.

Re: Importance of server location
I have been using a French hosting provider and this week all of their
servers have been down at some point
, 1 took 12hours to come back up.
Interestingly whereas they offer to host amongst others .co.uk domains,
Easily in the UK said they couldn't handle a .fr domain.
Will continue to look
