Google business maps
On SEO testing;
http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=bretts+plumbing&meta=&fp=1&cad=b I get my
man #1 plus a mini google map at the top of the page. Is this map just
because he is local to me?
IE could someone well away from Herts/Cambs region give that result a click
and see if you get a map and address of "Bretts Plumbing and Heating"
please.
Cheers.

From North-East London (ok, not that far) your man is #1, but I don't
see a map, just a plain Google listing.

No map for me in North Staffs.

So it is just a business service for the locals. That's interesting, Google
is pretty precise at detecting your I.P. location (or whatever you call it).
I really like Google, check this for a #1 nailing;

I can do that :)

The trick is knowing what your potential punters will type in :(

...unless i was looking for an odd type of ganja in staffordshire I don't
see many generic searches for that phrase, but then you do want to be easily
found by fans too.
As far as money earning punters go, this one is key for my tuition trade in
the town of Royston;

I can get good results with more general searches :)
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=barn+dance+staffordshire
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=barn+dance+stoke
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=barn+dance+cheshire
As long as we get near the top I'm reasonably happy.

But what about wider areas?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=guitar+lessons+cambs
I think you have more work to do

Nor here in Macclesfield (probably about the same distance) but your man
is still number 1, over a Bretts Plumbing in Notts/Derbys. Searching for
something else for a friend does yield a map for somewhere further away
<URL:http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=basildon+rugby+club> gives an
Essex map (as desired) - does Basildon, Berkshire not have a local rugby
club, perhaps?

Surprisingly all of my current clientell are from the several surrounding
villages 2-5 miles out. Villagers know what the larger town is called, they
all come to the huge Tesco and they expect us to be equiped with guitar
teachers too.
How far somebody is prepared to drive for 1 hour with me (or anyone) is
debatable, but as soon as you put 'North' in front of Hertfordshire, I
result at #8 anyway. (It's not a small county ;o)

Okay, this is interesting; For Bretts the map was coming up on IE only-
until I pasted it the URL here and direct into FF for last check. Now FF
shows it every time.
WTF? Try it yourself.

Despite coming from there originally, I'm sitting in Lyon (France) and
am just seeing a normal Google search

Well, I don't quite know what the defining factor is that says "display a
map" because I didn't script google Google, but my desktop is about 4 miles
from this company's front door and I get;
