Controlling Flash in the browser [OT?]
My perfectly-adequate laptop struggles to display fast flash animations,
and a site I regularly visit has a really annoying advert from
Volkswagen which (apart from being visually really irritating) uses far
too much CPU. At least VW have put a "Pause" button on the ad, but I'm
sick of web pages slowing down my machine with animations which I'm not
interested in - much worse when I want to open half a dozen tabs.
I tried disabling animations in IE8's "Advanced" options tab, and
restarting, but this didn't do the trick. What are the options here?

Back when I used IE regularly I used "Free Surfer" to regain some
control. http://www.emsproject.com/FS/ is the home of the current
version but I have not used a recent version myself.
These days I use Firefox 3.5.1 and the NoScript add-on to prevent
aggressive site authors from having more control of my browser that I
want.

Thanks, that's useful. I'll have to see if I can get over a very strong
disinclination to install add-ons!

Use Firefox and the Flashblock add-in.
This will reserve the screen space, but not play until you say it can. You
can also allow selected sites to always play.
No connection with the add-in other than as a user.
Years ago, when I used IE, I uninstalled the Flash player and this cured
the problem.

Apparently in IE8 it's built in (see

Fancy that! I wonder what else is lurking in IE8 that I'm blissfully
unaware of...
Thanks!
