playing mp3 files
I have a number of mp3 files on my band website www.slipperyhill.co.uk
which I'd like to play rather more elegantly. Flash, perhaps? Anyone
know of an easy way to achieve this?

The widget on http://www.vanmorrison.com/ is quite cool but I'd like the
ability to select other tracks.

What do you think about music playing straight away? Good idea, bad
idea?

IMS its only a couple of lines of html to play a mp3 file in flash .

Aint done it for years - but its possbile you might need to import the
track as a .wav when you create the flash file (chances are you dont
need to do that anymore unless your using a old version of flash) .

<div align="center"><OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-
444553540000"
 codebase="http://active.macromedia.com/flash2/cabs/swflash.cab#version=
4,0,0,0"
 ID=john WIDTH=22 HEIGHT=22>
 <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="john.swf"> <PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high>
</OBJECT>
</div>

john.swf ..... being the mp3 file it plays .

Keep in mind the above was a get the job done and forget about it .

It's one of the quickest way to get people exiting a site! Some will
object to others knowing that they are browsing the web at work, be
defended by a sudden blast of unexpected sound in their
headphones/ear-piece whilst others (like myself) just object to any
onLoad type multi-media... If you must deploy onLoad content then do
so after the index page and warn visitors that they are following a
link to such content, they can either then mute their listening device
or decline following the URL.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but the site is to get people to book the band. If
they don't like the music, they can leave if they want to!

I'm still in two minds over this one.

Doesn't this just put you in the mood?

Wonderful! I bet it's even more fun to play than it is to listen to!

The flash mp3 jukebox I used on crackguitar, see any of the 'music page'
links on http://www.crackguitar.com/recordings.html
I got from iStock. You don't have to edit the flash when adding tracks as
the actionscript interacts with a PHP file to search a set directory for mp3
files. It roles the file title and counts down the remaining time too.

Contrary to Jerry's knee-jerk response, this a band's music site, so no not
a bad idea as long as it's not on the home page and start/stop is clear.

N/A to a man of my taste, but you can push for more than 32kbit mono these
days. I don't put any stereo mp3 up at under 128kb, mono that for 64.

Are those ukuleles or banjos?

I had to make some really small files for one site and forgot to change
the converter back again. But as we plan to create a CD and sell it so
perhaps I'll leave them as they are.

5 string banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass.

Though the way Ralph plays it sounds like more than one banjo.

I don't want any website I visit to start making any noises unless I
push a button or save a cookie preference. When I go to band websites,
I hope there'll be some way of seeing a list of music and maybe sampling
some, but I never happy when they just start playing it for me.

I often have a lot of tabs open in my browser, and I often right click a
link, open a new tab to read later, and continue reading the page I was
on. So, if I see your site linked I may read it 10, 20, 60 minutes
after seeing the link. I don't want it playing music when it loads
because then I have to go find it, and I'll probably just close the tab
directly as the quickest way to stop it.

My feeling on the web/music issue is that even here it's best not to
play a lengthy track automatically - too many situations in which that
would horrify the visitor - but you might perhaps include two or three
seconds, and then put up a "play more" button?

One also has to remember that many people still do *not* have high
speed net access or are limited monthly data transfer. Preloading any
'large' file is annoying, and what constitutes 'large' is defined by
the downloader, not the uploader IYSWIM.

I'll probably investigate the flash jukebox idea for the main set of
tracks but for now I've put a little flash widget at the top of the page
which people have to start manually.

I get enough flak from the guys for playing an electric bass...

Just put 'Flash mp3 player' in iStock and look out for the one that looks
like mine. It comes with the photoshop file in layers so you can change the
colour staining and re-render the swf to suit your site style. Other than
that it's the kind of thing the rest of your band can handle when new songs
need to go up.

Oh, it does auto start once the file is ready to 'stream', so I put all mine
in popup windows.

Just to add to the comments about NOT having music playing immediately. I
have my lappy permanently connected to my hifi and it does not go down well
when I hit a site and music blares out. The quickest way to kill the music
is to click on the red X on my browser. And unless I simply have to surf the
site, I'm off.

Make it optional.

They may not want to listen to that music at that time.

Even a true fan is unlikely to, if visiting the site in order to locate,
for future hearing, more - while already listening to the band on CD.
Or if the other half is listening to, say, Sinatra.
