Question about whois information
For complicated reasons I find that I'd like to remove the whois lookup
information for a domain that I've recently registered.
I've logged into my control panel with 123reg and unticked the whois
information option to make my information private. I appreciate that this
isn't going to happen overnight but just how long does it take before one's
details stop turning up in whois searches?

Give it at least 24 to 48 hours.

It's been about 4 or 5 days now and the info is still there. Of course this
does include a weekend. Worth contacting 123reg about it or give it a few
more days?
If there is no public info on a whois search, how hard is it to track down a
registrant? I know this is sounding awfully cloak and daggerish but for
complicated reasons I'd rather not be identified as the owner of the domain.
No question of any illegal activities.

It depends largely on which domain suffix you're talking about. I find
.UK domain details update pretty much instantly (NamesCo), despite the
warning that it'll take up to 48 hours. Other domains are much longer
(.DE for example can take several days to change nameservers).

Doh! My contact details have gone but my name is still there. Do I have to
contact Nominet to change that?
