Cheapest way of processing net orders
I look after our running club's website and membership list and was
wondering about adding an online payment facility for club memberships.

I've found that it's easy enough to add something like Google checkout
buttons to take payments but that's not enough as I need to have a way of
capturing member details (date of birth etc.) and my webspace is too basic I
believe to allow me to do anything like that. (I'm just using my "free"
space provided with my Zen broadband account)

Are there any free options for getting this info gathered or is this a
service that I would have to pay for? If I had to pay a third party, would
I be better off upgrading my webspace to something that would allow me to
capture this data myself? Would I be right in thinking that i'd have to
register under the data protection act?

I'm afraid I'm very much learning as I go along so be gentle with me. ;-)

Most services, even free ones, allow you to install some method of
getting information sent to you by email from a form. They will
normally have their own method of doing this- check out the Zen website
for a form mailback script. If not, or if you want anything more
complex than that (an online database for example) you would have to
have your own (paid for ) web hosting, but this will not need cost a
lot. Easily within the budget of most clubs. To be honest it's
probably a better idea anyway.

I don't think registration with the DPA is necessary but registered or
not, you should abide by the 8 data principles (as I'm sure you already
do). In any case the DPA is about data stored, not the method of data
capture.

Cheers, I'll do that.

You've not met our treasurer. ;-)
