Anybody used htaccess in a form?
Can anybody give me a URL as an example of a page which uses htaccess
details entry as an embedded form rather than external entry box? That's if
it is possible.

Are you taking about HTTP Authentication?

Yes. Enter username and password, but I want it in a html form.

You can do that. But you will need to use an actual server side script
(such as a PHP script) to handle the request.

My man Ben prefers PERL, does the same job doesn't it.

I'm looking to see the completed HTML on a page myself, and to get an idea
of what it is I'm asking him to do is good.

Thanks,

What are you trying to do?

I just want to know if I can apply the htaccess system using user/pass entry
to an embedded and stylable HTML <form> rather than the default & old-school
box you get.

I haven't asked Ben because it's a Saturday and he's out hitting balls, not
taking calls. Besides, I am still looking for a URL to see the form. Have
you got a site in your history which uses this?

As far as I know the boring box is generated by the browser so you get
it whether it's Perl or PHP. What I want to know is why you
particularly need to do it with htaccess?

Not trolling for a change , But thats actually quite rude del .

For obi wan is offering to take some time and effort to help you and in
this particular case its upto you to do a cut-n-paste of the appropriate
text so he doesnt have to hunt for it .

Fuck - even though it would pain them to do so - even pedt and molly
would probably agree with me on that one .

Fuck - even obi wan might agree with me as well :-)

I'm more bothered by the fact that he comes asking for help here only
when his tame coder is unavailable Kinda makes me feel second best.

I know very little about Perl so I don't know if it's possible to do
what he wants. I've protected all sorts of stuff, usually by bunging it
in a directory above the webroot and then getting php to fetch it after
a successful login. Then he can have whatever form he wants.

Apologies for that post, shouldn't have poked my head in last-minute when I
knew I wouldn't have time to actualy discuss anything.

> I'm more bothered by the fact that he comes asking for help here only

That is not the case. I try not to go to him for help, he got sick of that
years ago when we house shared and I was still learning HTML, so now I get
my facts straight first and go to Ben when there's actualy a job to do.
Hence I came asking whether it is even possible to put htaccess in a <form>
and seeing my part of the work on a page before I go asking him to do it.

I didn't want to go through my life history so I just said he was out!!

I appreciate that Perl isn't the most popular script out there, I don't see
it spoken of and I am not asking for any advice on it. He could go PHP if
Perl couldn't cut it, it's not a huge mission like dynamic pages is it.

Re:
>>> What are you trying to do?

Judge all my options for password protection.

I had tried a very simple page encryption software that uses javascript to
scramble up the entire page's HTML until login. This is something I can do
entirely on my own but is obviously risky for accessibility.

Htaccess is one I tried, and works with no accessibility or cross-browser
issues, but is not pretty and the entry box does not sit in the page. That's
where we are now. It can sit in a form, but you need a script like php to
send the form details to the htaccess controller.
Question answered, and you have suggested the php fetch.

Thank You,
