Questions from a novice
I just set up my first web pages, which start here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~wildlifepaparazzi/
I built them using Earthlink's Trellix builder. Obviously, I know nothing
about web building. It seems to work fine, though. I have over 200 nature
photos with detailed descriptions. So it's educational, but I also offer
them for sale. I assume that most of my sales will be from folks I have
told about the site directly (e.g., customers who come by my booth at an art
fair and ask for it.)
So how do I get the word out to others? I did see how to enter my url into
Google. (However, 24 hours later, it still does not come up when I put in
the site title, "Alan Justice Photography".)
So how do I get listed with other search engines (e.g., Yahoo)? And how do
I increase my priority for listing? I'm guessing there's a good book or web
site out there that can explain all this (Web Hosting for Dummies?).

It will be several weeks before it's listed at Google.
>So how do I get listed with other search engines (e.g., Yahoo)?
You can do it by finding theur URL submission page, the same as with
Google. However, once it's listed with any search engine, the rest
will eventually pick it up. The most important thing is to have
inbound liks to the site from other websites.

>I increase my priority for listing?
The best thing you can do is buy a domain name. They only cost a few
quid, and having your own address on the net instead of lurking in the
undergrowtth of another site will increase your visibility
considerably.

Have a look at http://www.webcredible.co.uk - in particular, look at
the section on search engine optimisation, at

Bollocks .
Any time i've added a new url to www.vhit.co.uk then its been crawled
and appeared on google within 48hrs .
e.g. adding a url to any website that google currently crawls is much
faster that going through that manual submission process shite that can
take several weeks before its processed .

New URLs on an existing site get added quicker than a new site.

Exactly.

It will if you just submit your site and hope. I've had brand new sites
on brand new domains picked up in under 5 days by using the XML site map
route through.

You could also just buy some advertising (online advertising is quite
cheap). Mind you I am not sure of how effective buying things like
adwords actually is, as you need to get people to click your ad and
then they need to then contact you or buy your products or whatever.
