None of this even counts. If you're not first, then only people who feel
unlucky will find you. ;-)

If you're going to start quoting local searches for SEO promotion;

The 1 result that beats me there is a guitarist with the same surname as my

We've been there before- I can't drive because I'm epileptic. But what
amazed me about Google recently is there is 3 larger towns 'Letchworth'
'Hitchin' and MUCH larger 'Stevenage' That are between 10 - 20 miles out
from me. I do not try to SEO these places, yet on these searches I result
between 3-4 and I have 5 people bringing either themselves or their kids to
me.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=guitar+lessons+hitchin&meta=
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=guitar+lessons+stevenage&meta=

Come To Daddy.

I can only assume the SE association with these towns is down to my links to
the guitar shops there and their return of links.

http://www.google.com/search?q=motorway+services 1st out of 308,000

http://www.google.com/search?q=british+surnames 1st out of 372,000

http://www.google.com/search?q=file+mouse 1st out of 13m

http://www.google.com/search?q=mine+of+useless+information 1st out of
1.8m

The first two of these are more impressive, despite being top of a
smaller set of results, because they're things that people actually
search for.

However, being top for a specific search phrase isn't necessarily the
most important thing. Often, what matters more is getting your
internal pages top of the results for more obscure searches. For
example, motorwayservices.info is the first result for both "motorway
services" and "motorway service stations", but these two searches only
account for 8% and 2% of visits respectively. The majority of visits
to the site are the result of searches for specific, named service
areas (try "Watford Gap Services" for an example). Something like 80%
of traffic to that site comes from this "long tail" of over 4000
different search terms that all return the site in the first page of
results. On another site that I worked on, an ecommerce site, a search
by name for more than three quarters of the products on sale will
return that product's page in the top five results.

Most so-called "SEO experts" will focus almost exclusively on getting
top ranking for a select few distinct keywords leading to the front
page of the site - partly because that's relatively easy, and partly
because it's measurable (and hence easily chargable). But the most
successful websites, in SEO terms, aren't the ones that come top of
just a few keywords from the front page, they're the ones that come
top over and over again for hundreds or thousands of different
keywords leading to almost every internal page on the site.

Notice how often Wikipedia, for example, shows up in the first page of
results for a whole host of different searches, or how often Amazon
shows up when you put a book or CD title into Google. Using the power
of search engines to genuinely index your site (as opposed to simply
listing the domain) is one of the most fundamental principles of
search-friendly design.

What about this:

http://www.google.com/search?q=golf+lessons+hampshire

Ok, only eighth but it IS an internal page. The latest version of our CMS
uses mod_rewrite for the URLs so this would be
www.portsmoouthgolfcentre.co.uk/golf-lessons.

I wonder if that would make any difference?

Getting the keywords into the URL certainly does help. The British
Surnames site I mentioned in my previous post hovered around the
middle of the first page of results for ages, until I gave it a
complete makeover including using mod_rewrite to create "wordy" URLs
instead of GET variables. After the makeover it went to the top of the
results, where it's stayed ever since.

On the other hand, motorwayservices.info still uses GET variables for
internal pages and that doesn't seem to have been a problem. But it's
a more obscure topic - there are really only a handful of other sites
on the same theme, so it isn't difficult to be the best. Names and
genealogy, though, is a very popular market segment, so getting to the
top of the results takes more work.

I've not actually watched that program so I don't know the phrase you're on

now.

Now there's a nice looking site. I can't comment fully on its accessibility
but the code looks like it should be ok.

Nice design, CSS layout, fluid width, and really useful info. The only
thing I would like to see would be 'last updated' info for the services.

It's not quite as accessible as it ought to be, and it fails some
validation (which I aim to fix when I get sufficient tuits). It was
originally an experiment in CSS layout - previously, I'd used tables,
and this was my first attempt at a fluid three-column design in CSS.
It isn't perfect, and I'd do things differently now if I was starting
from scratch, but I'm quite pleased with it as an early effort.

I created the design before I came up with the content - I wanted to
do a CSS-based site, and rather than convert an existing site or use
an experimental design on something important, I just plucked a topic
out of the air and decided to write a site about motorway services! I
chose that partly because the information was already readily
available elsewhere, so I just had to collate it, put it into a
database and then write a front-end, and partly because it seemed like
the sort of off-the-wall topic that the Internet is ideal for. I had
no idea at the time how popular it would become.

>Nice design, CSS layout, fluid width, and really useful info. The only
>thing I would like to see would be 'last updated' info for the services.

That's a good point - adding that shouldn't be too complex, as the
information is already there in the database.

And, in fact, I have now done so.

That's the nice thing about Usenet. Having a "last updated" date on
the facilities pages seems like an obvious thing to do now, but I
doubt it would have occurred to me without someone else suggesting it.

Travelling up to the in-laws, this is the place to stop for food:

	http://www.motorwayservices.info/area.php?area=21
	(Thorntons don't sell food?)

and this is where we stop for a toilet break and a coffee:

In your list by operator, you have an operator "Poplar 2000" with no
service stations. That is because Poplar 2000 was bought by Moto. The
(only) service station they used to operate is called "Lymm M6" on your
site, but still branded "Poplar 2000" on signposts. No, don't ask me how
I know this.

That's the problem with trying to group things into arbitrary
categories :-) I don't think Thorntons are a food shop in the sense
that you would stop there for lunch, although they clearly are a food
shop in the sense that what they sell is edible. The point of the
categories is to distinguish between the type of outlet that people
would be looking for if they want a meal or snack of some sort and
types of outlet that sell other types of products.

Yes, I really ought to take Poplar off the list of operators now.

I'm not convinced that being 1st on the 1st page is actually a benefit. I
ran a site selling 'adult toys' and the way that I built the business was
using Overture where you could bid for specific positions. We found that
when we bid for 7th to 9th position we got 2-3 times the amount of sales for
a quarter of the traffic compared with 1st position.

In most cases when buying something people will check several sites. They
start to either get blind or see the same prices and products over and over
again.

If they've just looked at 7 sites they're not going to go back to the first
one, they'll buy from the last one they visited.
