Gallery hosting?
Hi everyone. I've just royally screwed up security fix for "Gallery".
( http://gallery.menalto.com/ ) and now a close friend of mine who was
using that software is now rather unhappy with me.

(I think it was because the upgrade went from 2.0.x to 2.2.4 and something
didn't quite mesh. Or maybe I slipped and deleted a critical file. I
dunno.)

Its clear I'm not really qualified for this sort of thing, trying to
maintain a website from the distant side of an FTP connection. Even if I
could do a clean upgrade, this event bought light to what-if the next
critical update was published while I was on vacation, or in hospital.

So anyway, I'm looking for a web host that can supply an installation of
gallery (or similar) for my friend and keep it updated and backed up. I'll
arrange for a CNAME record to be added so gallery.example.com points to
your host.

I am aware of flickr and similar hosts. We will consider these, but this
isn't what I'm looking for right now. One reason is that another friend
(whom I would want to transfer over too) uses gallery but is for family
members only. Go to her home page and you'll only see a login prompt.

Any recommendations please?

Yep - learn to write your own scripts .

While i only wrote the www.jpgimage.co.uk script because i got fed up
with fireing up a ftp app just to upload a single image to some webspace
- the main problem is that other peoples scripts never really do what
you do or dont want them to do and if you try to do anything other than
minor alterations to them (and you your case a upgrade) then they have
the nasty habit of stopping working .

..... i know bill from a tv newsgroup and i'm sure in the time honoured
fashion he will ignore anything i say :-))

Have you seen what Adobe Photoshop Lightroom's web module can do? It's very
flexible, creating online galleries which it will then export locally, or
upload via your usual .ftp connection. Fun to use, too.

See: http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/2008/01/01/customizing-web-gallery.html

The app is intended for RAW images, but will also happily work with .JPGs,
etc.

Works for me...
