Update #3: 2009-11-03 19:01 GMT
Our control pages are IDN aware now, showing any punycoded hostnames
and domain names on the control pages in UTF-8.
IDN allows international characters (unicode) to be used in URLs, and
translates them to more normal domain character sets. The control pages
do not translate to punycode, but if you have a domain or host name
starting xn-- it will convert the output to UTF-8 making it easier to
manage.
e.g. xn--74h.aaisp.org shows as âº.aaisp.org on the control pages.
This can then be used in a browser as http://âº.aaisp.org/
Registration of IDN is tricky and there are some complex rules, but if
you want something in a specific character set then we should be able
to do that. Most of the registries have restrictions on character sets
and mixing languages as well as not using characters like âº, sadly. But
if you are interested, do ask.
Support of IDN is not 100% yet. It is down to the application (e.g. web
browser, email client, etc) to handle the characters and many do not.
| However current versions of most browsers do manage it.
