[Status] [info] Stable systems
Posted at 2009-10-22 09:10 BST by RevK
Update #0: 2009-10-22 09:22 BST

As you know the LNS platform we operate has been getting more and more
stable, and it is rather unfortunate that there was an issue late last
night. Ironically, even with occasional issues such as this, it seems
we are a lot more stable than BT's 21CN. We see BT RAS's resetting
almost daily, and ongoing issues which are gradually being resolved but
are taking months to get fixed properly.

Whilst we take BT issues seriously, and work closely with BT to try and
get them to resolve them quickly, we take issues with our LNSs and
routers even more seriously!

Industry Standard is something we used to aim for, but we think that
the bar has been lowered rather too much lately so we aim somewhat
higher. The FireBrick products have to be perfect.

The LNS platform is basically stable but it is pretty much impossible
to eliminate all errors in any system. Having an off-the-shelf solution
would not eliminate bugs or crashes totally either (as BT are
realising).

Because we are part of the FireBrick team we are able to get issues
like this resolve properly and quickly. Bugs in systems follow an
exponential decay curve, and that is what has happened. We had several
issues the first few months after switching to the new LNSs, and the
issues have got less frequent and the causes more and more obscure and
unlikely. Even so, two engineers were working on the problem last
night, and by 8am this morning the cause of the problem had been found
and a fix produced. Within a few days (after this is tested) we can
deploy this on the platform.

We do hope customers understand the work that is going in to this. Our
aim is that you all have a 100% reliable broadband service and we will
keep working towards that goal.

Thank you all for your understanding.[IMAGE]
