[Status] [info] 21CN congestion
Posted at 2009-10-10 13:27 BST by RevK
Update #0: 2009-10-10 13:28 BST
We are aware that BT have managed to resolve congestion issues in at
least one exchange, finding, it seems, that capacity management was not
working properly and the back-haul was operating on a much older and
much lower level. We think. We don't have details yet.
We don't know if this has been resolved in other places yet, but usage
levels, even on a Saturday, are encouragingly high, so it looks
promising.[IMAGE]

Any further word from BT on this?
Also it's not just 21CN lines affected, my line is 20CN with no prospect
of that changing (unless I go LLU and move from A&A) but the line is
next to useless for even simple web browsing intermitantaly most
evenings with 10%+ packet loss and average latency over 80ms. I realise
that this isn't something you can directly resolve but you did cause it
with the change to the backhaul for the 20CN users.

It's not universal: I'm on 20CN and see no degradation here.

How long have you been an AAISP customer (or on 20CN)?

me?
been with A&A since getting broadband 8 or 9 years ago, been on this
line for 3 years, throughput dropped like a stone on the backhual
changeover but improved after Shaun spoke with BT but this new problem
is different.
Further to Rev's comments, seems to be a bit more reponsive tonight.
Fingers crossed but still not 'right'

20CN: Many years. AAISP: only since August, forced off Zetnet by the
Breathe implosion and promptly kicked myself for not migrating long
before. Crappy line quality at first, but that's been proved to be
Neanderthal extension wiring: on the right extension socket my link is
flawless, and I regularly get >750Kb/s TCP traffic for fairly long
periods. Latency low, drops rare (in the range of one a week).
I'd call that pretty good.

Should be long enough to see 'some' comparison then.
All I know is since the switch from the old backhaul my connection does
not seem as good (though it is marginal for me). There are certainly
more unexpected disconnects.
People who I have persuaded to move to AAISP (all way before August) and
know nothing at all about the technology (they just know when the
connection works), have all complained in recent months that the service
has had issues (disconnects and slower speeds). They all used to comment
on how good it was and how happy they were to have made the switch.

If you take the speedtest at http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/speedtest/
then you can compare your speeds with your neighboursÂ…
Although I set my ISP as AAISP, I turned up in their stats as Virgin
Media, so we don't need to worry that I didn't quite come out fastest in
my vicinity - Virgin will get the blame. Mind you, they are also basking
in my "Incredibly satisfied" rating. I've contacted them about this flaw.

That test gives me a lower rating than speedtest.net (13.5/0.7) but I'm
still way faster than any of my neighbours :)

Jinxed!
Line down @2035 or thereabouts, not up yet, ADSL link is fine but PPP is
down... LNS problems?

As Snoopy said:
"It's not the winning that countsÂ… it's how much you win by!"
I ran the test several time, and of course there were large variations
(it was early evening). It's sensitive to the browser you use; I nearly
always got better results with Opera 10.0 than Firefox 3.5.3 - I didn't
bother with the IE6 that I keep for business reasons.

That happened to me a couple of evenings ago, around 22:00.
Rebooting my router normally fixed this for me, but not this time around.

Yeah, well, this turned out to be a bigger problem. Thankfully AAISP
comaintain their own routers (how many ISPs can say that?) so we get to be
a beta-test population *and* get quick bugfixes.
