Which UK based hosting for tiny CMS-based site?
Hi,
I was wondering if I can have some advice on a hosting solution.
I was tasked by an impecunious volunteer group to create and put on
line a basic newsletter.
This newsletter would contain some photos of events, a calendar,
articles, comments, etc. and is to be updated weekly, if not more
often, but will attract a limited number of visits, and therefore its
bandwidth needs will be limited.
For this reason I was thinking of some sort of basic CMS especially
because I wanted to separate the layout from the contents (i.e. I'd be
happy to teach our computerophobic secretary how to enter the new text
in some sort of database, but not how to create or modify pages).
The advice I need is actually on two fronts.
1) All the open source CMS I found require PHP and MySQL
2) All the cheaper hosting solutions do not offer PHP and/or MySQL
Do you have any idea on how I can reconcile the two needs? Such as for
instance, do you know of some CMS system (or equally suitable system)
which doesn't require PHP? or do you know of some basic hosting that
offers it?
TIA
Lorenz

34sp.com was £15 a year the last time I looked and you get php/mysql .
If your volunteer group do the 'but we dont want to pay' routine them
wave ta ta to them and dont waste any more of your time .

Assuming £30 is OK see.
http://www.dataflame.co.uk/hostinglinux_all.html
Have not used it yet but planning a similar thing.
Also
http://www.ukdomains.com/hosting.html
http://www.blackcatnetworks.co.uk/services/hosting
seem low cost.

Have you thought about a blog? Blogger allows you to customise the
template (or create your own) using CSS, and the resulting blog can
either be linked to externally or integrated internally in the web site.
(I have implemented this, but I've just been looking into it for a
client who specifically requested a solution like of this sort.)

http://www.jamroll.co.uk/ was mentioned in another group many months
ago. They only ask that you have your own domain name (you can get a
..org.uk for a few pounds, or a .info for as little as US$ 2.99 so it
should not break the bank), and they add a few text link adverts as
their way of covering costs. I've not used them but you could look
on some site like www.webhostingtalk.com for comments by other users.
They offer 350 MB web space, 5 GB/month traffic, and 2x MySQL db:
- PHP / CGI / PERL / FTP
- 30 Email Address's
- Addon CGI Scripts
- PhpMyAdmin
- Fantastico
Looks like this is not UK-based hosting, and support is via forum.
But could otherwise provide all you want... or try search tools!

Thanks a lot to all for the comments and the suggestions. Armed with
this I will now go the treasurer and tell him that 30 quid a year is
actually cheaper than postage...

I have been using www.me2uweb.com for a few years, their £30 per year
(+VAT) deal offers PHP and MySQL, and easy setup of forums with phpBB
and a CMS phpNuke which may suit your needs.
I've used them for a variety of sites for volunteer type groups, and
they seem to offer a reasonable balance between cheap and reliable.
