If you, Molly, myself and my cousin were sitting in the same physical 
place together sharing a drink I'd probably have said (pointing with my 
finger) "him and me" rather than "he and I".

Wasn't Priestley (I'm presuming J.B.) emphasising that difference? Which 
brings us onto the well chewed chestnut of "are we in a room together 
here or not?"  Some people think we are, other people know they are not.
