Heh, last family wedding I went to something similar happened.  Family 
from both the bride and groom side ended up chatting happily and 
questioning if the other people were on their side or the others!  It 
became fun after a while to try to work out which side the friends were 
on.  Both families met and got on fine so the purpose of the marriage 
(in one sense at least) was met.
