Tivo - extracting video
I've had a Tivo for several years now, and I still think it's the best
gadget I've ever bought!

One of the things I'd like to be able to do with it is archive off
some programs, so that I can play them later on my PC or Xbox Media
Center.

So, I have some questions:

* Is this even possible? (I don't see why not, but...)

* What software & hardware would be required? (A network card for the
Tivo, obviously, but what else?)

* Are there any guides to doing this? (I couldn't find much with a
Google search - there's too much about series 2/3 Tivos and
Tivo-to-Go that gets in the way...)

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Dave.

I would imagine the Tivo newsgroup would be a better place to search
then ask if appropriate.

The program you want is tytool. You'll need to buy a turbonet card (or
cachecard, which also speeds up the TiVo's UI) and be a bit PC-savvy.

The place to look for info on linking your TiVo to your network is
www.tivocommunity.com but don't ask about extraction there, it's not
allowed.

Discussion of extraction is centred around the dealdatabase extraction
forum at <http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=48>

Exactly the sort of stuff I was after!

Now I just need the time to read, digest and learn... :-)

Many thanks.

This is probably the easiest to read, as it only covers the UK TiVo:
http://www.arielbusiness.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/freeranger/TiVo/HowTo.htm

For MPEG extraction you also need tyTool 10r3 from here:

You would be well advised to use the mode 0 hack at the same time as
this will give you DVD resolution output, which allows for much easier
editing and authoring. This will also improve Tivo picture quality
generally.

Personally I would just buy a DVD recorder. Tivo extraction is too
much hassle.
