Yes, it was very weird. I did look at the www.toppy.org.uk fora after it
happened but I didn't see any reports of anything like it. I could only
conclude it was a one-off.

No warning, no strange behaviour before hand. The only strange thing
about that week was that it was the week that the clocks went forward.
After the incident I have started noticing that I'm getting quite a few
bad recordings: perhaps one recording in eight has ended up with either a
zero-length recording or a recording of the wrong channel or the programme
before or after what I wanted. Although I'd read that lots of people got
these with the new firmware, I think I saw only one before the incident.

About 50% full, with about 40 saved recordings in three folders. Some of
the recordings were very old (from shortly after the initial import of the
5800. I do have 36 entries on my recording schedule, though. I bet
that's high. I'm usually out when my favourite programmes are on so I
need something with capable recording properties. That's why the new
firmware is important to me.
