Humax PVR-9200DT, EPG Group 2 & "Series-Link"
Hello all,
I have one of these bought and it's still boxed. Ihave made the mistake of
assuming this device had some sort of "series link" feature that enabled you
to capture all episodes of the same show.
I've done a little reading it now I'm really confused - Humax seemed to have
talked this feature up at some point, in conjunction with an update to the
Freeview standard (EPG Group 2...?). Also, the schedule of this update
seems to be for around now, according to some projections. I can't find
any defining information on the situation today.
This device is too expensive and useless without it for the price (I'm a
long-time Tivo owner).
Can anyone comment on this - the Humax seems to appeal to those who like
simplicity (e.g. like my parents, the intended recipients) however I'm now
wondering if I should return this in exchange for something else?
Any help greatfully accepted!

I've got a feeling that a previous poster mentioned that there is a whole
new upgrade coming for the PVR-9200 range sometime in January, so perhaps if
they read your request they may be able to supply you with the required
information.

Not me but it is widely reported that Humax (i) are already shipping new
models with the 1.00.20 software which adds Freeview Playback Group 2
(see www.freeviewplayback.co.uk) and (ii) have promised an OTA update
in January. Plenty about this on Digital Spy and hummy.org.uk. The
software is not yet available for download from Humax's customer support
area - something some attribute to them still tweaking it. (I've not
been too bothered as I don't trust ITV/4/5 to maintain the EPG
accurately.)
If you do not want to set up yours you may be able to tell what software
is installed from the labels (though I don't have the box for mine to
check) or, of course, by asking the retailer from whom you bought it.

It does as of a few weeks ago.
They made the software to enable this feature available to download on their
website a while back , but there has been no over the air update as yet. I
believe it's due some time in january and will have a couple of minor
changes from the download only software.

They did say it was coming , but I believe that there were also changes
needed to the EPG which played a part.

See above.

It's far from useless without it - mine has done great service over the last
year - but having it is a noticable improvement.
As for the price - it's lots better than the cheaper competition and £150ish
seems a very good price to me.

There isn't anything simpler.
Just download the software now (You'll need a serial cable to install it) or
wait for the upgrade

Dear Alex
Can you give me a clue as to where? I have looked again in the light of
your comment on http://www.humaxdigital.com/hcsa/ without success.
(Latest I could find there is still PGXTF 1.00.15 which only gives
Group 1. I know there was *a* version on hummy.org but I felt that
might not be authorised for oldies.)
Yours cluelessly

I got mine from hummy.org but I could have sworn it did eventually appear on
Humax's site.
I can email it to you if you like. It's only 1500k or so

Thanks but if it is the one which is 1,465,801 bytes I picked it up from
hummy.org while it was going just in case.
I think it is still there at

That's the beastie - works fine on my PVR9200T which originally came with a
significantly older version

As your machine is still boxed, you don't know what software it had. It
could be 15 (no series link) or 20 (series link). As others have said,
new software should be available in January.
Problem with series link (and accurate recording) is that the
broadcasters may not provide the necessary information (some do, some
don't as yet).
There is always the possibility of manual search for all episodes for a
week.

I bought one for my very aging parents - it is the most successful of
all the gadgets that I have got for them in trying to make their last
years as comfortable as possible. It is just so easy and intuitive to
use.
I wouldn't bother about having the series link too much though; it
seems to be rather limited and in my opinion detracts from the overall
simplicity.

Indeed, very valid points. And consider too that the Humax has one of
the most intuitive and easy-to-use menu command systems out there right
now and the remote control is one of the most logical; ideal for
parents, aged or otherwise, and everyone else. I wouldn't change it.
