Using Topfield TF5800 without a remote
May be a stupid question but does anyone know how to access the recorded
services menu (file) without using the remote - mine has just died (yes I
have changed the batteries etc).
I can get to the main menu and some other sub-menus but cannot get to see
existing recordings, so am stuck for playing them otherwise until I get
another remote.

You could copy the files to a PC, using the USB link and Altair. My
experiance is that files copy over the USB link at just about twice real
time. VLC will play the files as they are.

Turbo mode goes a damn sight quicker than twice real time.

Hookup to a PC and copy over the OSD Remote TAP, which is designed to
help in pretty much this situation.

I have a spare universal remote which I could program to replace a
Toppy remote. Available at a reasonable price. Please e-mail me if
you're interested.

Aproximately 6 times realtime (still pretty piss poor for USB2) when in
turbo mode (stops remote working). However, the poor performance over
the USB2 link is just simply a reflection of how inefficient USB is in
terms of CPU loading being highlighted by the modest (by today's PC
standards) CPU performance required to completely satisfy the "Record 2
stations and playback a previous recording or watch a third, if tuner
resources permit, live program".
It's a crying shame that the Topfield didn't sport a LAN port. Even a
humble 10/100Mbps ethernet adapter would be a vast improvement over that
interface abomination known as USB and would have avoided the need for a
remote control killing "Turbo Mode" option. This would have provided at
least 12 times realtime worst case (5 minutes to download an hours worth
2GB BBC recording) or better transfer rate for almost zero CPU usage.
Still, 6 times realtime isn't _too_ bad, but it could have been so much
better with a LAN port. :-(
