sky pay once deal
I'm considering getting the Sky 'PAY ONCE, WATCH FOREVER' package for £75
I currently have a freeview box/pvr - would I be able to connect it up to
the sky box to record?
Or if necessary, if I got a new pvr only would it be able to be connected
tot he sky box to record?

no.
freeview pvrs just capture the over the air digital signal - they can't take
an external input and digitise it.
you'd need a dvd recorder - or a vhs, for that.

Mmmn, maybe I won't bother then, don't really want to go to the expense of a
new PVR too (I assume a plain PVR would record Sky??)

depends what you mean - pretty much any pvr on sale is a freeview pvr.
if there exists a pvr that doesnt contain tuners, and accepts the input of a
freeview box or sky box that would work - but short of the long unavailable
tivo i'm unaware of such things.

This 160GB Freeview PVR _does_ record from a Satellite box, has EPG for
both Satellite & Freeview, supports series link, and also is a DVD
recorder / upscaler.
Sony RDR-HXD870
<http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=RDR-HXD870S&productsku=RDRHXD870S.CEK&site=odw_en_GB&pageType=TechnicalSpecs&imageType=Main&category=DVD+Recorder#tab>
Only can record one show at a time though, but looks a bargain for
around £200.

Yes it will record from a satellite box if fed into a scart socket or heaven
forbid UHF.
Were is the satellite EPG ? Dont think it supports Series Link either and
lastly its a shame the reviewer hasn't done his job, this model doesn't
upscale to 1080P, as claimed, only 1080i, its the ES model that does that.
Other than that its a rather nice piece of kit, timed recordings to either
DVD or HDD, just make sure on the DVD you set the correct record mode
setting !!!

It is taken from Guide+ EPG broadcast

The Sony link I gave is for the RDR-HXD870S. States both series link and
1080p upscaling, and same price as the reviewed RDR-HXD870.
Download the user manual - good read... (If you enjoy reading this stuff)

Thanks for the links..
The analogue tuner seems a bit of a shot in the foot with this one, surely a
dual digital with an OS to deal with all the dual recording etc would have
made this a viable alternative to the 'usual' PVRs on here.
It's good to see the DVD recorder starting to be included though. (as
fortold by NostroJimus in passing months) This opens the door for its mass
market use as a proper VHS replacement,.with archiving facilities.

Sorry your original reply gave me the impression that it had both satellite
EPG & Freeview EPG, it certainly has the latter but not the former via
Guide+ EPG, how would it know what satellite your were recording from as its
only a DTT

Okay using your provided link it states series recording not series link, I
understand that may be record for x weeks at the same time, not series link
as you would imagine on $ky + where it follows the change of timing. But
could be wrong here only ever used the EPG record facility to record one
programme at a time, not a series.
And if you got to the overview / features tab next to the Technical
Specification tab you linked to and hover over the underlined upscaling
hyperlink, you will quite clearly see
Up-scaling DVD recorders or players with an HDMIT output can up-scale a
Standard Definition signal to 576p, 720p or 1080i High Definition. Depending
on the product you are using, the recorder / player will either do this
automatically, based on the resolution of the panel, or you can adjust the
settings yourself. Our new ES receivers can up-scale the incoming signal to
the highest HD standard, 1080p!

Don't need to, got three in work which I use :) As I said in my previous
reply they are a cracking piece of kit.

The machine can either use the DTT EPG or the Guide+ EPG. Guide+ has
details about Sky satellite channels and the box can control the Sky
kit. (Page 69)

It supports Series Link reading series information in the EPG data that
links episodes. (Page 57 of the manual). This is not a dumb setting of
"let's record Eastenders at 8:30pm every wednesday" etc...

Sony Marketing Codswallop. Page 147 of the manual "HDMI Settings (HDMI
Output)" clearly states 1080p as supported. It should be supported on
the standard machine (no reference elsewhere to an ES model)
You've got a great machine there. I'm amazed Sony hasn't priced it at
their usual rake....

Why can't this Thompson be connected to record?:

because all it can do is capture the digital terrestrial broadcasts as they
are received in their original digital form.
they dont have to encode any pictures - they just grab that which is
already there.
to record a sky receiver you need a machine that has the hardware to accept
a decoded signal and turn it into a digital one of some form again - just
like a dvd recorder does.
