Ahhh - Tivo is back in my life!
Hey all,
Just thought I would mention that I have bought another Tivo off ebay.
I missed it so much, I just had to have it back. I am using it with the
shite sky plus system - I am so pleased about all the fab menus in Tivo that
I can now use again!
It seems to have gone a bit quiet on here about Tivo - are you all still
using it?
No sign of it coming back to the UK is there?

<Raises hand>

Don't know how I ever got along without it looking out for programmes
for me and various other things Sky+ and Virgin boxes don't do.

Six years and counting.

I've got two sat in my loft.

Couldn't justify £10/month for listings now my Toppy has arrived. Far
more storage and two built in DTT tuners are big plusses for me.

Although the TiVo interface was a dream, I can cope with the MyStuff TAP.

Re: Ahhh - Tivo is back in my life!
I know what you mean about the £10 a month. It is a bit of a rip off but I
will pay it as sky have dropped their fee now and the interface is so much
better.
I need to look at increasing the HD on mine though. It is the standard 40gb
in the unit at the mo.
I have seen drives for 250 and 400gb advertised on ebay. Do these work OK?
I seem to remember when I had mu old Tivo that you were restricted on bigger
HD's as the speed was too quick and they did not work well in the Tivo's.

I guess this must have been sorted out?

Every 6 months or so I check this forum for a "my XXX box is so much better
than my old Tivo!" post. 8 years and counting...

How does a Topfield handle Virgin's basic channels (I'm type who is
satisfied with endless "Extreme Machines" and Top Gear), forcoming cable HD
and HDMI output? Do they have something in the pipeline?

I would seriously consider a custom-built hifi-style Vista Media Centre PC
(i.e. ~£600+) - If anyone could assure me I would miss none of TiVo's
featues?

TIA

Ahhhh.. you should have hung in for a lifetime subbed box. These are
going below the £200 premium originally touted. I got a lifetime 40GB
Tivo box recently off eBay for £140. I now have two of them sat under
the TV.

If you have at anytime built a PC (and can install an OS), and have a
spare desktop PC to hand, configuring a new virgin drive is not much
work. A preconfigured drive is easier - but not as much techy fun....

Nope. Speed was not the issue (except a noise & heat issue which with
new Samsung 7200 RPM drives is non existant - I use SP2514N 240GB drives
in mine).

However, drives larger than 137GB need a new kernal installed and an
increased swap file.

Be careful, there is a discernable link between Tivo and/or Toppy owners
whereby they get just as evangilical, indignant, pompous and clique'ish as
those nutters who are religiously devoted to their Apple Mac's, in fact
there is a direct correllation between owning a Mac and a Tivo/Toppy
and the ensuing lunacy involved with such cults.
You have innocently mentioned you may consider a custom built Media
Centre PC, this of course is not an option to the sect of the Steve Jobbo,
and his temple to the over-priced Mac, and mentioning a PC in the same
post as a Tivo/Toppy and/or Mac will result in cockerels throats slashed,
and goats sacrificed at the altar of the poncified Mac Book Pro.
Take care, enjoy your Tivo, but beware the cult.

This is why I'm heartily recommending that all likeminded TiVo goodfolk
should take themselves away to the excellent UK TiVo community to avoid
crossing these countermovement types with their wierd anti-spells and
confusing deprogramming double-speak. At TiVo community you will be
quite safe from harm, loose psychologists and psychiatrists, and will be
"in with the program". Enlightenment guaranteed through wonderful
majesty of the "Now Playing" screen. If *anyone* takes that away from
you, expect deep trauma and an unpleasant lifestyle reassignment..

Now cry together in unison,

Viva, TiVo forever!!!!!!!!!

Yawn. (From a very happy Imac and Tivo user who is very anti-religion)

Oh, and try using a spell-checker next time. I'm sure your Bill Gates
machine has one (assuming Vista lets you have enough ram to actually
use it that is).

That's cause so few people had a Tivo in the first place to compare them to

But what with Sky changing their menus around to more closely match the
TiVo setup, who wants to put a few quid down that we're going to see a
Sky branded TiVo offering not so long from now on the HD package?

Wouldn't happen. The TiVo system in all it's variations is based around
open source development, and some gentle hacking by owners is tolerated
- with even some encoragement and support in some areas. For BSkyB to do
that, murdoch would have to go into hospital for a benificial lobotomy.

I wish. Every time I switch the tivo off (admittedly rarely) I hate waiting
to see if it'll come back on. Not that I've ever had any problems with it,
but it's over 5 years old now, and if it's going to develop a fault it's a
good chance it'll show on a power cycle. Being able to buy a current
generation Tivo of any description would be most welcome, and it it was
fully integrated into the sky system then all the better!
