New Toppy owner .. ;-)
Hi All,
I actually got round to plumbing in my 5800 yesterday and I'm
gradually feeling my way round the options / functions.
Up to a few days ago I was mainly running from a very old (NTL /
Cable) Jerrold STB into a distribution amp and round the house to
mainly analogue receivers.
I had added a Thomson DTI 2300 DTV STB a while ago but didn't use it
very often but we do get a pretty good signal off CP, only issues
being 'nose' (scooters normally) causing picture breakup. The aerial
is in the loft and the feeder isn't foil screened (another job for
another day).
The missus has been using a cheapy (Argos) Panasonic(?) FV STB into
her PC when she wants to watch other stuff (soaps) :-(
I have also been using a Lite-On LVW-5026 (Analogue / 160G HDD /
DVDRW) and I found that pretty reliable and easy to use.
We also have a DTV video (Daewoo / Setpal and mainly for the missus as
tapes are 'easier' <g>) but because it didn't have a RF modulator and
was all a bit tricky to add into the system, especially so because our
21" Sony does have a SCART socket it also hasn't been used much.
So, back to the Toppy, what should I do with it .. ie, what should
every Toppy owner run / add to allow it to do better or work at it's
best / easiest please? I have upgraded the firmware (over USB) and
transferred a short recording from the Toppy to the PC and played it
there ok.
I have found the picture in picture and played an MP3 but haven't done
dual recordings or played with the EPG etc (and haven't really used
them or any Video+ type stuff in the past (not since timer recording
on the video years ago maybe)).
I currently have the twin tuners looped through each other and think
it was all working before I read the pdf manual and noted that Tuner2
out should go to RF in? What would I have not been able to do with
that step missing then please?
Could I (in theory at least) feed the RF output of the Cable STB into
the Toppy RF in and 'combine' the two services? Or the RF output of
the Thomson DTV when we just want to 'watch' (rather than watch /
record) one chan and to leave the Toppy off etc?
All the best and thanks for your time in any case ..
T i m
p.s. A mate recently gave me a bigger Tosh CRT TV that at least has
SCART connectors and I might put that in place of the Sony, at least
till I can afford / justify a flat screen of some sort.

Seconded 100%. Then read the MyStuff manual and learn about control
timers. You'll hardly ever have to set a manual timer again.

Cheers guys,
I downloaded as you suggested and got as far as:
"4. Transfer the 4 TAP files and the 2 logo files into the Auto Start
folder"
but I don't think I've got an 'Auto Start' folder and it does say into
'the' Auto Start folder not to make one (and if I was to do so where
do I make it please)?

Hmm, well I don't seem to have one Andrew?
In the \ProgramFiles folder I just have usbcomms.dat and
usbcommsready.dat files?
Should I make an Auto Start folder then?

Thanks for that.
So, I created the folder, transferred the logos and taps and after a
reboot and scan stuff seemed to happen (although I'm not sure how it's
different yet as I've been out all night).
It was suggested I also install the OneList tap but am not yet sure
how to start such (it's not supposed to go in the Auto Start folder).

The Guide screen should look a lot different, the EPG should have
populated by now.

If you don't loop tuner 2 out to RF IN, then all you'll get on the RF
output is the modulated signal from the Toppy. Adding the loop means
that anything further down the chain will have both the Toppy's signal
and everything from the aerial.

It makes the radio stations part of the TV station list instead of
having to press the TV/radio button.
To run it just select it in the Program Files folder on the Toppy and
press OK. It's a run once thing so it doesn't need need to be in Auto
Start, indeed IIRC it requires input from you so not something to have
in auto or it will muck up recording by timer.

If you don't loop tuner 2 out to RF IN, then all you'll get on the RF
output is the modulated signal from the Toppy. Adding the loop means
that anything further down the chain will have both the Toppy's signal
and everything from the aerial.

Yes.
I'd also recommend (but then, I would, I run it) that you spend some
time over on www.toppy.org.uk where there's a whole army of helpful
people who'll often respond to your queries within minutes.

Yeah, I have been over there Nigel and now I have some more Toppy
specific questions I may well return. ;-)

Seconded 100%. Then read the MyStuff manual and learn about control
timers. You'll hardly ever have to set a manual timer again.

Cheers guys,
I downloaded as you suggested and got as far as:
"4. Transfer the 4 TAP files and the 2 logo files into the Auto Start
folder"
but I don't think I've got an 'Auto Start' folder and it does say into
'the' Auto Start folder not to make one (and if I | |
