If it's actual Sky recordings you have no options which come anywhere
close.

What do you mean by "indifferent performance" by the way. Perhaps
there are some easily solved problems.

It freezes regularly and only the power cable being taken out of the back
for 30 seconds or so clears it. It is mainly for sky recordings so I'll just
have to wait until an improved version appears then.

Thanks for the reply

TIVO. Great bit of equipment.

So does TIVO record sky progs? And I assume that I still pay the £10 to sky
for the priviledge!

Tivo can record sky, no problem....your biggest issue is getting hold of
a Tivo as they are no longer produced in this country. Any box you may
find will more than likely be second hand. That said I've been running
my Tivo since 2003 and have yet to have a single problem or crash, the
only down time I've had with it is when there has been a power cut and
that's saying something !

I've yet to find another box that matches up to a Tivo and the
technology is around 6 years old. The down side is that it only has a
single analogue tuner in it (because of it's age) but I record via scart
from a freeview box. If you are a $ky + user you may miss the ability
to record 2 progs at once but apart from that you won't miss a thing
(unless you have HD). Tivo has a subscription model which is £10/month
or £200 for a lifetime subscription. I took the lifetime sub and
obviously am quid's in now. Another thing, Tivo is very easy to upgrade
and you can even put a web server on it to control the box remotely.

Certainly worth a punt if you can find one on Ebay at a price you like.
Look for one that has had a Hdd upgrade as a minimum.

It doesn't forget your series links either (season passes on TiVo) if
the programme misses a week.

I've got Sky HD too, which I only use for watching HD stuff and as
backup for TiVo on the rare occasion of a recoding clash with no repeat.
Original plan was to replace TiVo with Sky+ years ago, but I couldn't do
it :-) Now the Sky+ has been replaced with Sky HD, but I still can't
bring myself to ditch the TiVo.

Re: Replacement for Sky+
TIVO does record Sky but only from a Sky Box so you still have one of
these with the usual potential for freezing and locking up in the way
that all Sky boxes do.
The TIVO sends commands to the Sky box to switch channel as necessary
for recording but you cannot then watch a different Sky channel at the
same time.

No, there is no payment to Sky for the recording function, any more
than there would be for using a VCR.....BUT.....Sky have just dropped
the £10 charge for Sky Plus from the 1st of July so long as you are a
subscriber to even the most basic Sky package of channels.

to record 2 progs at once but apart from that you won't miss a thing
(unless you have HD). Tivo has a subscription model which is £10/month
or £200 for a lifetime subscription. I took the lifetime sub and
obviously am quid's in now. Another thing, Tivo is very easy to upgrade
and you can even put a web server on it to control the box remotely.

Certainly worth a punt if you can find one on Ebay at a price you like.
Look for one that has had a Hdd upgrade as a minimum.

That is quite correct, however if you don't pay Sky the £10 subscription you
will have a crippled service.
It won't download the EPG which in turn means you can't activate a season
pass (series link).
Plus I think anything you record won't be labelled.
I'm sure there are other negatives for not subscribing.

That is quite correct, however if you don't pay Sky the £10 subscription you
will have a crippled service.
It won't download the EPG which in turn means you can't activate a season
pass (series link).
Plus I think anything you record won't be labelled.
I'm sure there are other negatives for not subscribing.

I've got Sky HD too, which I only use for watching HD stuff and as

Re: Replacement for Sky+
TIVO does record Sky but only from a Sky Box so you still have one of
these with the usual potential for freezing and locking up in the way
that all Sky boxes do.
The TIVO sends commands to the Sky box to switch channel as necessary
for recording but you cannot then watch a different Sky channel at the
same time.

No, there is no payment to Sky for the recording function, any more

If it's actual Sky recordings you have no options which come anywhere
close.

What do you mean by "indifferent performance" by the way. Perhaps
there are some easily solved problems.

It freezes regularly and only the power cable being taken out of the back
for 30 seconds or so clears it. It is mainly for sky recordings so I'll just
have to wait until an improved version appears then.

Thanks for the reply
