Virgin 1 takes Bravo's Sky EPG slots
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a88360/virgin-1-takes-bravos-sky-epg-slots.html
Virgin Media is to reshuffle its presence on Sky's electronic programme
guide on Wednesday, February 20.

The shake-up will see Virgin 1 and its one-hour timeshift replace Bravo and
Bravo+1 on channels 121 and 122, giving Virgin 1 a far more prominent spot
on page two of the EPG compared to its current position at 153.

To accommodate the changes, Bravo will move to 123, Bravo+1 to 124 and
Challenge will move to 125. Challenge+1 and Bravo 2 will take Virgin 1 and
Virgin 1+1's old slots at 153 and 154.

I do, as I use digiguide, and tv software to record on my computer

But presumably you can put channel 153 in as easily as 120???

Yes I can, but I use a red eye on the sky box, and then tell digiguide
what I want to record..it sends the info to the tv software, which
turns the digibox over.

Position on the EPG can make the difference between 10,000 viewers and
1,000,000 viewers. Look at ITV, easily 90% of its output is at best, equal
to pretty much any of the minor digital channels, but its position on the
epg (and inertia) means that it gets huge numbers.

If you ran an episode of say, a popular show, such as law and order,
simultaneously on Hallmark and ITV, one will get four million viewers and
the other will get fourteen thousand viewers.

There is a hint in Radio Times which states that all programmes on
digital channels are repeats unless otherwise stated - which doesn't
happen very often. This is not so with the main five channels - they do
have repeats, it is true, but not to such a high extent. That, IMHO, is
the reason.

No one would believe they were both the latest episode. Popular believe
would be that the Hallmark one was an old episode. Besides there are
still a lot of viewers without Sky so the possible viewing figures could
never be as high.

I consider looking at possible ITV figures is irrelevant to the possible
impact of moving Virgin 1.

While plenty of your points are valid, and maybe it was a poor example by
myself, but you seriously underestimate the impact of marketing and
positioning. Getting to the top of the list (or next to another important
channel), makes a huge difference to viewing figures, most people dont even
know whats on some channel at 194 never mind actively making the choice to
view it.
